A brief history Debuting in 1996 as the Ansett Australia Summer Series, Women's football's first foray into a domestic national league witnessed a condensed league heavily backed by the state's respective sporting institutes. With Australia hosting the Olympic Games in 2000, the league was pivotal in providing more opportunities for Australia's aspiring talent. Chopping and changing it's format almost at will, the competition was often staged in hubs, with match rounds played in a singular location. By 2004, the competition was well and truly under the auspice of the newly branded Football Federation Australia, and the 2005 edition took the form of a week long Championship, ultimately signalled its demise. It would be four long years before domestic league football would return.
