Melbourne come from 4th place, 24 points behind the league premiers, away from home and snatch a record 4th championship. While that might have been the story to end an exciting finals series that featured villany and redemption inside 30 minutes, an outrageous scorpion kick goal by Riley McGree and a slightly less impressive but nonetheless good bicycle kick by Berisha to snatch a win the talking point was the VAR system. The A-League being one the trial sites that FIFA had in place had it's ups and downs during the season with outrageous delays and some odd decision making but it was the showpiece event where the opening (and ultimately only) goal of the game should have been ruled out for a clear offside but was not due to a technical fault meaning the video referees could not access the footage until play had resumed. Oddly the host broadcaster had access to replays straight away. Whatever the reasons for this "technical glitch" it has tainted the title for Melbourne, who will rightfully care zero. You might argue Newcastle were equally lucky in the semi-final, but that's the joy of football. You get to argue passionately about things that matter very little in the grand scheme of things.
