Australia, having been set the task of qualifying for the 2002 World Cup via a playoff against the 5th placed South American qualifier are trying to play their prospective opponents by a series of matches against teams from this confederation. The latest effort sees Australia take on Paraguay the latter in the middle of those qualifiers and the former preparing for the Oceania Nations Cup. True to form Chilavert remonstrated with the referee at every turn and took free kicks ridiculously far from goal. This was a Friendly match.

After 227 minutes of failing to score against their opponents the Australians finally broke through and scored...then only too another 5 minutes to do so again. Kalac had a brain explosion and let the Paraguayans in for their first goal but the two yellow cards Chilavert collected in the 21st and 91st minutes ensured that Kalac lost out in the egg-on-face stakes. This was a Friendly match.

The Australians, having had a semi-successful warm up series against Paraguay then went on to play in the Oceania Nations Cup Finals which doubled as the qualifiers for the Confederations Cup. Australia were in Pool A, New Zealand, hosts Tahiti and late replacements for Fiji Vanuatu comprised Group B. Fiji, of course, were barred from the tournament after the Coup by George Speight. New Zealand beat Tahiti 2-0 in the corresponding Group B game scorers were Kris Bouckenooghe 27 and Chris Jackson 78. This was an Oceania Nations Cup match.

With a fairly convincing 23-0 F-A after two matches Australia made it predictably enough into the Semi Finals of this competition. Sadly the goalscoring came to an almost complete halt, a penalty the only way Australia could get past the Vanuatu keeper. This was an Oceania Nations Cup match.
