Introduction - Sources - Match Anomalies - Missing Referees

The nature of audting match records over three decades results in a number of anomalies. My process begins with taking John Punshon's full season record and determing the number of starting players for each team involved in every match across the entire season. In almost all cases, a complete starting eleven is revealed along with a number of substitutes. In some cases though, there may be a player or players missing from the starting lineup or more than eleven starting players are listed.

Substitutions provide their own dilemma. My auditing process isolates any match without a full set of substitions and it is with these instances where I have discovered the odd discrepancy. Sometimes it may be as simple as a referee not noting a substitution on the official team sheet, or in the case where a team sheet is unavailable, an anomaly may be identified via an alternative media source. Ultimately, the fewer sources available for a specific match, the more likely a substitution may have been missed.

In instances where there are no team sheets available, media outlets are indeed the only source of information when attempting to build an accurate match record. Below is a list of match records where anomalies are known to exist. I would be keen to hear from any journalist or match reporter who may have covered these games from either a print or photographic perspecitve. Better still, if you are referee or club official involved in a match and you have kept some records over the years, your input is more than welcome. Please contact me at vicfootball via e-mail or twitter if you can shed any light on the missing information from these matches.
