The format of the 1962 Dockerty Cup differed from the format of previous years. Because of the increased size of the lower leagues it was decided to confine the 1962 Cup to 16 teams, the 12 State League teams and the top two teams from Division One North and One South. The top eight teams from the State League were seeded to play the bottom four of the State League and the Division One teams. Clubs which did not qualify for the Dockerty Cup played for the Federation Cup.
