The 1995/6 season begins with this intriguing battle between two teams who are generally expected to feature prominently in sentences containing the words "losers", "no hopers" and "couldn't score in a brothel". It is pleasing then that the 6,837 Novocastrians were rewarded with an entertaining match which promised much when Jason Bennett intercepted a really bad square pass from the UTS defence and beat both chasing defenders and the goalkeeper to give the Breakers the lead. However a Milan Blagojevic engineered opening was well put away by Peter Tsekenis before Ralph Maier fouled Kimon Taliadoros in the box and it was only a late-ish strike from Damian Brown that brought smiles all round.

Goal : Tony Perenich 64
Whoa! Watch those Morwell boys go. Warren Spink dined richly on the rather poor defensive errors of the Wolves and by what little I saw on the highlights I would say he might well have added to his tally.

Frankies back! Brisbane have moved to Suncorp Stadium (from Perry Park) and bought in one of the Socceroos favourite sons - Frank Farina. The game was more or less decided on penalties. First Clint Bolton made an absolute mess of a cross and bought down Andy Harper who looked likely to benefit. Then Farina got the even-upper when Jason Polak was hacked down by Luke Casserly and gave Farina his first goal in the A-League for quite a while. However it was a very clumsy Steve Jackson challenge for a header against Francis Awaritefe which bought the games third penalty before Bingley took his opportunity while Brisbane pushed for an equaliser and sprung the offside trap and took his shot unchallenged.

Played (08/10/1995) Hindmarsh Stadium
Referee : J. Papanicolas, Crowd : 4,680
Adelaide City
Jason Petkovic, Milan Ivanovic, Sasha Nedeljkovic, Alex Tobin, Bradley Armour, Jamie Perin, Goran Lozanovski, John Gibson, Craig Foster (Angelo Costanzo 78), Damian Mori, Bradley Hassell

2 - 0 Canberra Cosmos
Danny Milosevic, Paul Wade, Paul Dee, Richard Watson, Jason Dunn, Joe Gagetti, Arsenije Popovich, Jimmy Baxter, Willie Hastie, Michael Garcia, Lachlan Armstrong
Damian Mori is going to score plenty this season but of the greatest significance was the Cosmos ability to hold the Zebras to 0-0 for nearly an hour. Although not really creating many chances Canberra showed that they are not going to be the leagues easybeats everyone makes them out to be.

1 - 0 South Melbourne
Dean Anastasiadis, Steve Mangos, Alex Kuzmanovic, Con Anthopoulos, Vaughan Coveny, Paul Trimboli, Ivan Kelic, Bill Damianos, Mike Petersen, Tansel Baser (Michael Curcija 76), Sasa Nikolic
A tight match between the local rivals which was notable for the complete and utter absence of quality finishing. The only goal came from an attempted hook away from the goal which was misjudged and ended up looping into the goal beyond Anastasiadis' reach.

Played (08/10/1995) Sydney Croatian Sports Centre
Referee : Mark Shields, Crowd : 4,160
Sydney United
John Perosh, Robert Trajkovski, Velimir Kupresak, Mark Rudan, Mark Babic, Paul Bilokapic, Domenic Usalj, Robert Enes (David Zdrilic 63), Ante Moric, Ante Milicic, Sean Babic (Robbie Markovac 86)
0 - 0 West Adelaide

No goals but a win to United on points. West Adelaide were able to defend when neccesary and left the rest to the now legendary inability of United to put the ball in the net.
