INTRODUCTION TO A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF AUSTRALIAN SOCCER
(First published in Studs Up in 1996)

The following is a bibliography of Australian books about soccer or Australian soccer players.
It is compiled from titles in my own family library, research at the National Library of Australia and the Australian Institute of Sport Library in Canberra.

Though extensive, I make no claim for it being totally comprehensive and indeed would like to hear from anyone who can supply me with additional information. I can be contacted at the following address:

Peter Kunz 8 Renwick St, Chifley ACT 2606

In compiling this bibliography I was struck by the relative dearth of publications compared to the other Australian football codes, and some glaring gaps, such as the need for a current history of Australian soccer or the National Soccer League (SU12 also notes this glaring omission). Many of the books listed in the bibliography would be quite hard to find second hand, and a few would be extremely scarce.
Most would not have had large print runs.

I mention in passing the following associated publications which are also of interest to the Australian soccer historian.

General Australian sporting encyclopedias - Examples include the "Encyclopedia of Australian Sport" and "Ampol's Australian Sporting Records".

Soccer Newspapers - "Soccer World" (Late 1950's to early 1980's), "Soccer Action" (1970's to 1980's), "Australian and British Soccer Weekly" (1980's to date), "Inside Soccer" (1996 to date).

Soccer magazines - "Shoot Australia" (circa 1994-94), Soccer International (circa 1994 to date), "Soccer Australia" (circa 1994 to date).

Individual soccer clubs and associations yearbooks, literature and programmes

Government reports and academic sporting journal articles

Campbell, Donald - The Campbell Files - Adelaide, Margaret Bowden, 1995
The only Australian soccer book written by a retired top level referee. Contains interesting insights into the running of the game as well as personal observations on players, coaches and officials of the last twenty years.

Clues, Andrew and Jack, David - Soccer for Coaches and Players - Sydney, Australian and New Zealand Book Company, 1977

Grant, Sid - Jack Pollard's Soccer Records - Sydney, Jack Pollard Pty.Ltd., 1974

Brief biography of the career of the former Socceroo captain. Includes interesting early photographs.

Micallef, Philip - The World Cup Story, an Australian View - (Publisher unknown) Caringbah, 1994

Nettleton, B and Smith, R - Soccer for Teachers, Coaches and Players - Adelaide, Rigby, 1977
Handbook of soccer coaching for junior players with a particular emphasis on fitness training.

Olivier-Scerri, G.E. - Encyclopaedia of Australian Soccer - Sydney, Showcase Publications, 1988
Title of this book is misleading. It is specifically a history of the Australian soccer team between 1922 and 1988. The book mainly consists of reproductions of newspaper reports and photographs. Pre 1960's and especially pre 1945 information is fascinating. A list of Australia's international results is at the back of the book.

Possibly the most popular book on Australian soccer. Released prior to Australia's participation in the 1974 World Cup Finals it provides a history of the world game within an Australian context. BIBLIOGRAPHY OF SCHOLARLY SOURCES ON OZ SOCCER
(First published in Studs Up 1997)

Most scholarly sources on Oz Soccer and sport have been published through the Australian Society for Sports History. Each year the Society puts out two editions of its Bulletin and journal, Sporting Traditions. There's a regular series of monographs on special themes and the Society has organised the publication of such major books as The Oxford Companion to Australian Sport and Cambridge UP's Sport in Australia.

'Sporting Traditions' conferences have also been held biannually since 1977. This year members of the Society organised the inaugural 'Football Conference' in Brisbane, 21-23 March. Melbourne is to host the second such conference in 1998, probably out at VUT (Victoria Uni.) Sunbury, and from then on biannual events are planned on alternate years to 'Sporting Traditions' conferences.

Membership of A.S.S.H is cheap, currently $20 p.a. for individuals, students $10 p.a. (It might go up soon, but not by much.)

NB. Club histories, celebratory or anniversary histories, biographies, autobiographies and journalistic works have been excluded from the bibliography. So too have been non-sports specific books, mostly centred on ethnic communities, which deal in part with soccer. Manuscripts and obscure reports have been omitted as well.
