0 MATILDAS HIT BACK TO DEFEAT CANADA After holding Canada scoreless through the first half, the Matildas lifted in the second term and took the game more to their opponents. Australia was rewarded with what became the winning goal from striker Kelly Golebiowski, her third goal from the last six matches after going scoreless for her first 38 international appearances. The Canadians enjoyed the better of play in the opening 45 minutes, but were unable to break down an improved Matildas backline. In what was overall a fairly lacklustre Australian opening half, Tal Karp had one of the visitor’s best opportunities but her 11th minute long-range attempt was tipped over the bar by the keeper. Shortly before the break, Australia started to show some encouraging signs in attack. Joanne Peters struck from the left with the keeper out off her line, but the ball was cleared by Canada’s defence. The home side again started the second half in attacking mode, but Australia soon finally settled and retained possession for more sustained periods. Then Golebiowski finished a neat Australian move in the 64th minute to claim the lead. Raiding up the right, Golebiowski turned inside and from 25 metres, unleashed a stunning strike into the top left corner of goal. Matildas goalkeeper Melissa Barbieri made her international debut, celebrating the occasion with a clean sheet. Barbieri held firm as Canada fought on in search of the equaliser, and denied a certain goal, tipping a close-range header over the bar in fantastic style. The former midfielder is the first Victorian to play for the Matildas since 1995 when Jane Oakley played in the World Cup. National Coach Adrian Santrac was happy with the improvement shown from two days ago. "It was another very competitive match today," he said. "In this game, we were much tighter defensively, limiting their opportunities. Our second half performance was very pleasing to see. It was a well deserved victory, and our preparations for the World Cup Qualifiers (in April) continue with our next game in the US."
