MEXICO GAIN REVENGE ON QANTAS MATILDAS Mexico scored two late goals to defeat the Qantas Matildas 2-0 at Jalisco Stadium in Guadalajara, Mexico this morning (Aust time), gaining revenge for the 2-1 defeat Australia handed them three days ago. With a virus sweeping through the Australians and a high altitude venue taking its toll, the home side took advantage of the visitors' fatigue, scoring both goals in the final minutes. Once again, it was the boot of Maribel Dominguez which did the damage. Latest striking sensation Dominguez was tournament top goalscorer at the CONCACAF Olympic Qualifiers in April, with her tally of eight goals including the two against 2003 Women's World Cup semifinalists Canada which secured Mexico's surprise berth to the Olympics, and another double in the final which almost set up an upset win against the mighty USA. Sixteen-year-old midfielder Sally Shipard celebrated her senior international debut today, and played the full ninety minutes. Coach Adrian Santrac was happy with Australia's performance despite the result. "It might sound strange considering the result, but we played some of our best football of the tour," said Santrac who has guided the Qantas Matildas to a win and a draw over China and a win and loss over Mexico so far on this tour. "We dominated the match but didn't finish in front of goal, but I'm pleased with where we are just over a month out from the Olympics." The Qantas Matildas continue their Olympic Games preparation by travelling to USA tomorrow ahead of matches against Indiana State University, USASA All-Stars, and the USA national team.
