MATILDAS OPEN WITH DRAW AGAINST CANADA
The Matildas opened their campaign in the four-nation International Tournament in France with a scoreless draw against a solid Canada overnight in Poitiers.

Australia attempted to play a dynamic, attacking style of football when in possession, and both teams created half chances on goal early in the game.

Canada then came out stronger after an injury delay in play, and the Matildas were forced to defend for much of the game against a threatening attack led by star creator Charmaine Hooper. Australia's defensive unit was equal to the task, soaking up the pressure of Canada's sustained efforts on goal which included six corners and ten freekicks.

Australia's best chance came in the second half, a flowing string of six consecutive one-touch passes opening a path on goal but the final shot was not to match. Defenders Bridgette Starr and Kate McShea, and midfielder Joanne Peters performed well for the Matildas in an all-round team effort.

National Coach Adrian Santrac was pleased with the side's first game on tour, saying, "Overall it was a solid performance and we are content with the result. The team performed well under difficult conditions."

The Matildas next face Japan who lost their opening game to hosts France 1-0.
