Australia v New Zealand report by ASA

Australia 6 - New Zealand 0

In windy conditions, the Young Matildas took the half-hour to settle their nerves with the opening goal, and went in at the break with a two-goal lead after taking twelve shots to New Zealand's one. Australia lifted again in the second half against an opponent who battled hard but in the end could not match the Young Matildas' athleticism, skill, and fierce attacking prowess.

Midfielder Caitlin Muñoz opened Australia's account with a well-crafted strike from 20 metres. Six minutes later, Collette McCallum's power drive from 25 metres gave the keeper no chance and put the Kiwis in a catch-up situation from which they did not look like recovering.

Early in the second half, striker Hayley Crawford effectively sealed the match with a magical goal from a touch, turn, and chip over the goalkeeper. Emma Davison punished New Zealand further five minutes later, arriving at speed to neatly finish a cross from the hardworking Lana Harch. Muñoz again judged her shot superbly with a lob over the keeper for Australia's fifth goal, and Davison did likewise for her second.

New Zealand did come very close to scoring on a couple of occasions, but Australia's Harch headed one such attempt off the goal-line. Australian goalkeeper Lisa Hartley then displayed an amazing effort by sprinting ten metres back to kick a certain goal off the line with millimetres to spare.

National Youth Coach Mike Mulvey was excited and enthusiastic about the team's big win and the prospects for the finals in Canada, saying, "Today the players proved they are worthy ambassadors for Australia and will now carry the flag to the first women's youth world cup as deserved Oceania champions. This was a complete performance and the girls excelled in a big game. We now look forward to preparing for a great challenge in Canada."
