Despite the deafening silence which greeted my offer in the first instance I have taken it upon myself to blatantly breach the copyright of the ASF and Trielle Corp. (the publishers) and pass on the summaries of the American and English squads being sent to the World Youth Championships. I chose these teams as they make up the bulk of the r.s.s'ers I can write up others if it proves popular. It is better done now rather than later as retrospective information is not quite so interesting. Furthermore I'd be surprised if people knew all the information in these articles. Live and learn. If you don't want to know hit 'n' and flame me for wasting bandwidth. My comments in square brackets. (Begin quote) The United States of America : The USA romped through the first stage of its qualifying process, easily beating Bermuda (5-0), Trinidad (2-0) and Costa Rica (2-0) to reach the final round of the CONCACAF U20 Championships. Then things got tougher. The final round started with a disastrous 3-0 thumping by Mexico. Two days later, however, the team was back on track with a brilliant 4-0 win over Honduras (who went on to draw with Mexico). So it was all down to the last match against arch rivals Canada - with the winner qualifying for Australia '93. The victory was slim [was it!?] (2-1) but the USA had proven its mettle. With more games under its belt than any of its predecessors, the United States U20's team will compete in the WYC with high expectations. As in Australia, soccer in the US is in the ascendancy, with improved results at all levels. The Aussie bound Youth team is no exception. Only one player returns from the 1991 USA squad which failed to make the finals; Imad Baba, the inspirational midfielder. The squad includes three members of the USA U17 team that, like Australia, reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup in Italy in August 1991. They are Nelson Vargas, Brian Kelly and Matt McKeown. Vargas, who received a contract offer from Standard Liege of Belgium, has also played for the USA national team. Something Australia can't match [A surprise to me]. USA youth coach Bobby Howe relies on the agile Rick Koczak in goal. Koczak distributes the ball well and is confident in coming out to handle crosses. He is a steadying influence in an improved defence which has gained stability with the inclusion og Gregg Berhalter, a university player from North Carolina. The USA defence plays the ball out from the back well. Clint Peay, captain of the team, excels in this department. The midfield is the domain of Baba, the 1992 USA College Player of the Year. His great composure and leadership [I thought Peay was captain, oh well...] make him the best player of his generation in the USA [Big compliment, any US dudes have an opinion?] - and that's quite a reference in a country that boasts 4 million junior soccer players [quantity != quality]. Kelly, Vargas and Brian Johnson complete a hard working midfield that will keep on running for the full 90 minutes. Chris Faklaris , who also plays for South Carolina, is a striker who will be hard to miss in Australia. Standing all of 198cm, he was the leading scorer in the CONCACAF qualifiers and is lethal in the air, as you would expect. Miles Joseph and Rob LaBelle, who has recovered from a broken leg, are the other two US forwards. The Americans finished fourth in the 1989 FIFA/Coca-Cola Cup in Saudi Arabia, and the 1993 squad is hoping to match that result. As the host of the next World Cup in 1994 the USA wants the world to notice its ever improving football standard. This Group will play its preliminary matches in Melbourne. US vs Turkey (7/3), vs England (9/3) and vs Korea (11/3). The England summary will be in a seperate post.
