As promised here is the summary of the English team for the World Youth Championships to be held in Australia in March. (begin quote) England : England may have only finished fourth in the European Championships, but a bit more luck in the penalty shoot-out department and it may have arrived in Australia with a more impressive record. After qualifying for the finals with home and away wins against Iceland and Wales and a home draw and away loss to Belgium, the English blitzed Poland 6-1 in the Euro quarter finals. However the English lost to Portugal in the semis 13-12 on penalties after a 1-1 draw. Then it lost the 3rd-4th playoff to Norway by the odd penalty after a similar extra time scoreline. Once dominant in European youth football, England hasn't made much of an impact on the world stage in recent times. Shackled with the problem of securing the release of some of its best players from their clubs. England's participation in Portugal '91 was its first appearance at a Youth Championships since 1985. Unfortunately, despite high hopes of a good showing at that tournament, the young Englishmen barely created a ripple - they meekly bowed out at the group matches, losing to Spain and drawing with Syria and Uruguay. Australia '93, however, sees England about to repair some of its lost pride at this level. Managed by David Burnside [the name seems strangely familiar, can anyone help me here?], one of Britains top youth coaches, the young lions can be justifiably confident of performing well, especially as they are buoyed by the bulk of the squad being on the books of professional clubs, with a key group having first team, Premier League, experience. Tottenham Hotspur, one of England's top youth nurseries, is the major provider of those profesional players. Nick Barmby, an ex-international schoolboy international, scored two first rate goals on his Premier League debut for Spurs. Barmby's team mate, left midfielder, Jeffery Minton, is also in the clubs first team squad. Together with another Tottenham youth, team captain Darren Caskey, they are expected to be England's vital 'engine room' at the FIFA/Coca-Cola Cup. The player tipped by the British media to steal the show in Australia is Chelsea central defender Ian Pearce who is an automatic first team starter in the Premier League, as is Sheffield Wednesdayd midfielder Chris Bart-Williams. It's been a long time since an England team has created any sort of impression at world youth level, but team officials are confident that 1993 will see the young lions rampant. With thousands of countrymen to cheer them on, the young englishmen should feel quite at home - only Australia will probably enjoy stronger crowd support [notice the use of 'probably', such is the patriotism here]. The signs are all there that this may finally be the year of the English at the World Youth Championship.
