Roll up, roll up. This is another one of those posts about Youth Squads coming to Australia for the World Youth Championships (only 11 days to go). By special request from Serdar here is Turkey's summary. This would also be of interest to the supporters of the teams sharing Turkey's qualifying group (USA, England & Korea) Begin quote. As winner of the 8th European Youth Championship, Turkey comes to Australia '93 with one of the best qualifying records in the tournament. Both its preliminary and final rounds were hard slogs, and the team showed a lot of determination to overcome all opposition. A total of three wins and three draws against Israel (1-1 and 1-1), Greece (1-0 and 0-0) and Switzerland (4-0 and 1-0) got the team through to the Euro finals where victories over Hungary (3-0), Norway (2-1) and Portugal (2-1 after extra time) [I recall there was a game against Germany which they won 4-0 as well] saw it crowned champion for the first time. Turkey's teenagers achieved their country's first major international football success by winning the European Youth Championship played in Germany last year to qualify for the FIFA/Coca-Cola Cup in Australia. Turkey's success vindicated the policies of youth coach Serpil Tuzun, who combined work at the national level with his job on the Besiktas coaching staff. During the past two years Tuzun's youngsters have played almost 50 matches culminating in the 2-1 win over Portugal in the European final, which gave them their ticket to Australia '93. Four of Turkey's goals in the last three qualifiers came from Mustafa Kocabey of Galatasaray who, along with Tarkan of third division club Karahumruck, will be amongst the most lethal strikers on view in Australia. The entire Turkish nation celebrated the success of the youth team and interest in the Australian series is sky high. [As a side note the Turkish officials were the only overseas representatives present at the draw for the tournament] The Turkish media corps may well be the biggest (along with Brazil) at Australia '93. They will be reporting on a team which believes in itself after taking care of Europe's best. Turkey will be a strong prospect indeed, and it will have the added advantage of enjoying good crowd support from its former countrymen who are settled in Australia and have promised to turn out in their thousands to urge the team on. Turkey plays it tight at the back [no snide remarks please....oops I think that was one], with a rigid man to man marking system, against which Europe'sbest young talent had no answer. Its defenders all read the game well and support the attack intelligently. Up front, of course, there is Mustafa, the scourge of opposing defenders and goalkeepers. Lethal with both feet and good in the air, Mustafa will definitely be one of the players to watch in Australia. "We have a competent team and we will be very competetive", says coach Tuzun. "But we will be playing against the worlds best this time. It will be much tougher." Long one of the lesser lights of world soccer, the Turks now have a team capable of making the world sit up and take notice. Squad to be chosen from : Aygun Taskiran Bulent Kapucu Bulent Yilmaz Dursun Karaman Emre Asik Hasan Ozer Hayati Kose Ilhami Arslan Murat Turksoy Mustafa Saygili Mustafa Kocabey Okan Buruk Oktay Derelioglu Serkan Rencber Seyfettin Kurtulmus Sinan Demircioglu Tarkan Alkan Tekin Sazlog Temel Altuntas Turan Ilciktay Yetkin Akman Yusaf Tokac End quote. Anybody know something of Turkish naming convention? The names are sorted according to the first name, is the surname given first? Are there surnames in Turkey? Anyone?
