OK this is definitely the last article for a while. I'll not be able to post results of the national soccer league results on Monday as I tend to do, but if that worries you I'm sure there are other Aussies on the net who will gladly help you out. (begin quote) As the host nation Australia did not have to go through a qualifying process. Despite a shortage of warm-up games, coach Les Scheinflug is quietly confident of success. Buoyed by a semi-final berth in Portugal 1991, host nation Australia has high hopes of going one better in this year's FIFA/COca-Cola Cup. Young Socceroo coach Les Scheinflug thinks this side can at least match the magnificent achievement of two years ago. He is cautiously optimistic about his teams chances, although he would have liked more warm-up games. When you compare preparations of countries such as Brazil, Turkey and Mexico, then it is clear that the team could have done with more matches. Nevertheless, this Australian squad has been touted as being potentially good, if not better, than its 1991 predecessor. The team is based around captain Kevin Muscat, the lone survivor of 1991, sweeper Craig Moore, playmakers Ante Moric and Fabio Macolino and Swiss-based striker Paul Agostino. There is enough talent to reach the quarter finals - as Australia did in 1981, the last time the compettion was held in this country. Former Socceroo captain Johnny Warren who travelled with the team to South America last year, liked what he saw and believes that the team can go one better than last time. This Australian side has plenty of pace and creativity in midfield, and is a master of the breakaway in attack [just ask Holland how they lost the Olympic qualifier Hahaha :-) ]. Always noted for their physical qualities, Australian youth teams now combine individual flair with commitment. Today's Australian youth player is more developed than his counterpart of 10 years ago because of increased international exposure, but the competition is now also tougher, as, undoubtedly, the young Aussies will find out at this tournament. The Australian camp says it fears no-one, but is glad it won't have to meet Brazil until the later stages [the semis is the earliest possible meeting]. Coach Scheinflug believes that his side can cope with the pressure and high expectations of the home crowds and is reasonably confident of success. Australian fans are ready to get behind the Young Socceroos, and their performance in the early group matches may well decide the viability of the FIFA/Coca-Cola Cup where attendances are concerned. Organisers are hoping that there can be a repeat of Portugal '91 where crowds were miniscule at the start but grew to record proportions in the latter stages when the host team caught fire. [Surely it would be even better still to have good crowds all the way through with Australia being on fire throughout - I live in hope] Squad : (Surnames in upper case) Frank JURIC Craig MOORE Aaron HOLST Ante JURIC Marc WINGELL Kevin MUSCAT Sean CRANNEY Anthony CARBONE Paul AGOSTINO Ante MILICIC Peter TSEKENIS Jim TSEKINIS Ante MORIC Fabio MACOLINO Vas TRPCEVSKI Darren IOCCA Nick RADECKI Vince MATASSA (end quote) Australia play in Sydney against Colombia 5/3, Russia 8/3 and the second African qualifier 11/3.
