This was the match which sounded the death-knell for Germany who had lost in the earlier match to Uruguay. Ghana looked composed while Portugal looked like they'd rather be someplace else. The champions of this tournament in '89 and '91 Portugal made an early exit this time, and in all honesty it is probably just as well as they didn't deserve a QF berth. Portugal had nothing to play for and a Ghanaian win or 2-2 draw would give second spot in the group. A 1-1 draw would have meant a drawing of lots to see if Germany could still sneak in. CK Akonnor (or is it Akournoh?) who had come from Germany only days before provided Nii Lamptey an oppertunity after only 5 minutes. CK headed the ball down to Lamptey who smashed the ball across the keeper into the net. Lamptey's knee injury not seeming to bother him at all. Isaac Asare who was another late arrival also acquitted himself well. Ghana dominated play with Portugal only making sporadic forays and before half time Ghana put the issue beyond reasonable doubt, when Lamptey returned the compliment to CK and passed to him whereupon he neatly put the ball past Costinha. Costinha was later replaced after his knee injury, sustained against Germany, flared up. This was unlike the matches Ghana played against Uruguay and Germany and lacked the action and excitement those matches exhibited. Anyone who can win a match 2-0 on an off day certainly must be a threat though and Ghana are sure to provide one. Bambo and the long suffering Poejo showed a little spark but really I'm just searching for names among a heap of, for want of a better word, losers. Ghana 2 (N Lamptey 5, CK Akonnor 42) - Portugal 0
