Having only a slim chance at qualification Turkey needed many goals against the English side. The English, still not 100% sure of qualification for the quarter finals, needed at least a draw to ensure they would continue in the tournament. Almost 13000 people were there to see if the European Champions could show some of the form which got them to the tournament. England were looking good early, although the Turks were again pushing hard. Juliam Joachim was perhaps unlucky not to win a penalty early in the game when he was brought down after a good run and rounding some defenders in front of goal. The referee wasn't interested though and play continued. In the 12th minute Steve Watson threw the ball into the penalty area from close to the touchline. The ball missed the attempts at a flick on and came to a Turkish defender who, inexplicably, felt it neccessary to head the ball down after it came to him on the bounce. Julian Joachim was quite pleased to be given the oppertunity and plonked the ball into the top of the net. The English are making a habit of scoring from this kind of set play and it won't go unnoticed for the Mexicans. Watson was at it again soon after putting a shot wide of keeper and goal. England are looking better as they progress and their fans can draw comfort from the improvement. Turkey weren't just spectators though. After a bit of build up Ilhami crossed to ball into the edge of the area. The ball was headed on to Mustafa whose volley on the turn was too high to trouble the keeper but reminded England that they hadn't won yet. This was reinforced soon after when a scramble developed in front of goal and England defended desperately to keep the ball out. Again Steve Watson was instrumental, this time defensively. The second half saw England lead from the front, first Alan Thompson's free kick causing trouble and then Joachim being denied by a good save from the keeper. Not to be outdone David Watson made an excellent stop from Oktay's shot at goal from a tight angle. Marvin Harriott gave Turkey the chance to equalise after he brought Mustafa down inside the box. He did seem to be going for the ball but he was making sure that if it wasn't the ball he was getting Mustafa went no further. In what was probably the epitomy of the Turkish campaign the captain Ilhami sent the keeper the wrong way but didn't make him pay as the shot sailed over the crossbar. Even I could have done better than that. The match was whistled to a close only seconds later. The Turks will probably be disowned when they get home, but they still have the senior side to follow in the WC '94 campaign. For England the captain Caskey and Watson as well as Joachim were the stand out players with the Bartman and Ian Pearce doing their bit. For Turkey, well, the crowd did OK.
