Australia, the team which had two wins from two games, met Cameroon who had a record of two losses from two games. The crowd of around 27000 was bolstered by many children whose schools had been given free tickets by the ASF. They also had an annoying habit of walking back and forth across the front row in their hunt for autographs and a better view (but that's just a personal gripe). After the previous match had built up some atmosphere the Aussies knew that they couldn't afford to lose. A healthy rendition of the national Anthem by the crowd and my purchase of a team replica shirt were good starts. However things got no better than that. The Australian line up was forced into change through injury and suspension and although Jim Tsekenis, Aaron Holst, Fabio Maccolino and Darren Iocca deputised well for the abentees it did affect team performance. Unfortunately the effect was adverse. I was happy to have the Australians into the Quarter finals but I'd have liked them to stay in Sydney. At least now the people of Brisbane, and if they win there they go to Melbourne and Sydney, will get to see them play. On a personal note I was happy to win a WYC soccer ball with my purchase of a truly disgusting Hot Dog and a borderline Coke. Well about the game, I really cannot tell you very much of interest about it. Australia opened well enough and Cameroon were also looking confident eventhough they only played for pride. Roger Milla was sitting in front of me on the Cameroon Bench and he proved popular with the autograph hunters, he became unusually agitated during the match which surprised me but the man obviously got his team going. Cameroon grew in stature as the match progressed and it was beginning to show. The Australians relaxed slightly as the half time whistle approached but failed to counter the non-stop running of the Africans. Bernard Tchoutang, playing an attacking role, swooped on the ball on the left side, cut into the penalty area and fired it into the far corner of the net. In the preceding four minutes the Aussies won five corners but couldn't capitalise. Lack of capitalisation eventually became capitulation. The second half gave the Aussies plenty of oppertunity, Agostino hit the crossbar about four times, but no luck. Just before the end Cameroon rubbed salt into the wound when Jeffrey Yemba gave the ball to substitute David Embe who then showed great skill in shooting the goal in the dying minutes. This was after Cameroon were reduced to 10 men for a second yellow card to Marc Foe (I think). "Since the last World Cup everyone knows Cameroon and it would not have been right for us to fly home without any points", said coach Jean Onguene. "It was a great lesson for the boys who had a little cockiness knocked out of them...", said Aussie coach Les 'the Boss' Scheinflug. Let's hope this is the only thing knocked out from here.
