SASI Pirates won 3-0 over ACTAS Canberra Eclipse in cold and wet conditions to keep in touch with frontrunners NSW, although the game was not as one-sided as the scoreline suggests.

Canberra were immediately put on the back foot as the Pirates claimed the lead less than two minutes in, Marie Spagnoletti unleashing a great ball from deep on the right to the far post.  Jessica Halfpenny collected and beat her marker before placing the ball inside the right post from an angle 7 metres left of goal.

Eclipse fought back in fine fashion, attacking at will up the left flank through Caitlin Munoz and Simone Borucinski for the next half-hour but lacking firepower in front of goal.  SASI remained dangerous on the break, but Canberra goalkeeper Amy Beattie made a couple of top saves to deny Natalie Thomas.

The quality of play fell away for most of the second half but the Pirates sealed the win.  Nine minutes in, SASI's Rebecca Morrison was on hand to put the ball into an empty net after keeper Beattie had dived at Halfpenny's feet to block her shot.

Halfpenny scored her second in stoppage time, a brilliant flying header from 12 metres to finish a Dianne Alagich cross.

QAS Sting today moved up to third place with a comfortable 3-1 win over Victoria Vision.

The Sting  proved far too strong for the Vision, creating plenty of opportunities although they led by just the one at the break.  April Mann was the early scorer after ten minutes, winning out in a goalmouth scramble.

Midway through the second half, Sting's Lisa Dunne finished off a loose ball after a long-range freekick was parried by the keeper to double the lead.  Victoria forced their way back with a well-worked goal in the 76th minute, a Lee-Anne Hamilton cross converted by Caroline Saville.

But QAS sealed the win in the very next minute, Olivia Hohnke taking off on a solo run past two opponents before striking well to score from 12 metres.

NSW Sapphires handled the wet, muddy conditions well to record their 3-0 victory over Northern NSW Pride this evening to retain their four-point lead at the end of six rounds.  However they were well challenged by a determined Northern who were unlucky not to score in the first half of what was a physical clash in the rain and mud.

Sapphires' Michelle Carney worked hard up front and was rewarded with two goals.  Her first, midway through the first half, was a fine long-range effort over the keeper's head.  Her second in the 84th minute, killed off the Pride who had pushed forward in search of an equaliser.  A freekick from the right picked out Carney who flicked the ball in at the far post.

Midfielder Alicia Cavanagh scored late in the game, keeping her wits to rake the crossed ball out of the mud before driving low past the keeper.
