Queensland Sting snatched three valuable points from fellow title contenders NSW Sapphires with the 1-0 winner in the dying seconds of stoppage time on Sunday in Sydney.

It was a dramatic end to an evenly-fought but lacklustre encounter. In the warm and windy conditions, the arm wrestle produced few highlights and was bereft of the creativity and flowing passes more synonymous of these two sides.

NSW fielded Matildas Anissa Tann and Cassandra Kell, whilst Queensland included the Australian trio of Heather Garriock, April Mann, and Olivia Hohnke, all of whom had only arrived home from the US yesterday morning.

With the points about to be shared, Sting were awarded a freekick after a Tann push centimetres outside the box. Former Sapphires midfielder Garriock struck the direct freekick over the wall and the shot could not be held by keeper Kell. Mann forced her way through to collect the crumbs and walked the ball into goal.

Reigning champions Canberra Eclipse, fielding all five of their available Matildas, overpowered the young Northern NSW Pride for a 4-0 victory on Sunday. Canberra dominated possession throughout although didn't combine with real effect until the second half.

Amy Taylor gave Eclipse the early lead nine minutes in with a stunning strike from 35 metres wide on the right which flew into the top corner of the net. For the remainder of the half, neither team was able to string it together in the final third, and the battle was played out in the middle of the park.

Canberra showed more promising signs early after the break, and doubled their lead midway through the second interval. Kristyn Swaffer's header was blocked and in the ensuing scramble, the ball came back out off the goalline, pinballed off the leg of Amy Wilson and looped into goal.

Substitute and ex-Tasmanian Emily Parker was unlucky not to score on debut five minutes later for Eclipse, her effort hitting the crossbar. Tal Karp scored Canberra's third in the 70th minute, a sweet strike swerving into goal from 25 metres on the right.

A hail storm then stopped play for eight minutes, with Eclipse even hungrier upon resumption, a Karp volley hitting the woodwork and a Caitlin Munoz shot tipped up against the bar by rookie keeper Erin Hunter. Canberra scored number four in the dying minutes, former Matildas defender Swaffer slotting home in a goalmouth scramble in her first league match back from a three year absence.

Goals : Lisa De Vanna 8, 90, Stacey Stocco 39
Adelaide Sensation kicked off the opening day of the WNSL season with an emphatic 3-1 win over Victoria Vision on Saturday in Melbourne.  Adelaide held the upper hand throughout the match, controlling the play and applying regular pressure on the opposition defence led by Young Matildas playmaker Stacey Stocco and last season's Julie Dolan Medal runner-up Lisa De Vanna, a draft player from Perth. Victoria relied more on the counterattack to gain a sniff on goal.

Sensation pushed forward from the opening whistle and after just eight minutes scored the first goal of the season in fine style. De Vanna weaved her way past three defenders before finishing off the job. Vision goalkeeper Melissa Barbieri, who had only flown in from the US with the Matildas this morning, got her hand to the ball but was unable to stop it going in.

Victoria were unlucky not to equalise the following minute, a Sarah Groenewald strike saved by keeper Leanne Trimboli. The rebound again fell to Groenewald but her second effort was blocked by defender Chichi May at close range.

Adelaide doubled their lead six minutes before the break, Stocco with a 35 metre rocket into the top right corner of goal, giving Barbieri no chance.

Young Matildas striker Selin Kuralay worked hard up front for Vision but with no luck, whilst Stocco and De Vanna continued to menace at the other end, Stocco once hitting the woodwork.

Sensation finally claimed their third goal in the 90th minute, Stocco laying the ball into the six yard box for De Vanna who shrugged off her opponent before finding the back of the net for the second time. A minute into stoppage time, Victoria scored a consolation goal, Groenewald released with a Kuralay through-ball and slotting home, the goal her first ever in the league.
