Goal : Sacha Wainwright 19
Canberra Eclipse's new coach Clive Mackillop came away with a satisfying 1-0 away victory over Adelaide Sensation in his first ever WNSL match. His side dominated the first half during which the only goal of the game was scored. Defender Sacha Wainwright sent over a lofted ball from wide on the left which deceived goalkeeper Leanne Trimboli and drifted just inside the far post. Caitlin Munoz caused the Adelaide defence constant headaches and was unlucky not to add to the visitors' lead.

Sensation came out much stronger after the break and the attack see-sawed from end to end. Adelaide's efforts were thwarted by an impenetrable Canberra defence, Lia Augimeri closest when her shot hit the crossbar. Canberra were up against an in-form Trimboli whose flying saves stopped cracking strikes from Munoz and Tal Karp. WA draft Lisa De Vanna made her WNSL debut coming on in the second half for the home side and made an instant impression.

1 - 0 Victoria Vision

Defending champions Queensland Sting snatched a late 1-0 win over Victoria Vision, Elissia Canham the goalscorer with just four minutes remaining. Both sides struggled in the blustery conditions and overall it was a lacklustre affair. An evenly fought first half saw both sides with chances, but nothing clear cut.

Queensland emerged the stronger going with the wind in the second interval but squandered too many good openings, and Victoria's defence held up well. Queensland overall looked below par, missing key midfielders to direct the play. Vision's best chance was fingertipped over by the keeper midway through the second half. Sting finally found relief when a Lana Harch cross was well finished by Canham from 12 metres.

Venue : Valentine Sports Park, Sydney

5 - 1 Northern NSW Pride
Carpenter (Betteridge 46), Ingles, Alley (Colthorpe), Stevens, Attwill, Amber Neilson, Wilson, McMinn, Dunne, Gill (Shepherd), Crawford
Goal : Katie Gill 18
Season favourites NSW Sapphires underlined their ability with an emphatic 5-1 victory over young rivals Northern NSW Pride. Northern came back from conceding an early goal to then draw level, but NSW's dominant midfield and sharp attack produced three more goals to lead 4-1 at half-time. Alicia Cavanagh opened the Sapphires account after 3 minutes, slotting past the keeper, before Pride equalised through a breakaway well finished by Katie Gill. Kelly Golebiowski, Taryn Rockall, and Cavanagh then found the net.

NSW added their fifth early in the second half through Lisa Warrener. NSW eased off the pedal and brought on all five substitutes and Northern soon tired.
