This was a new post-season competition involving the top 5 State League Clubs and the 3 National League clubs. Heidelberg United withdrew before the competition began, claiming it had too many players unavailable because of national team duty. Their place was taken by the Australian Youth Team, which was preparing for the 1981 World Youth Championships
