HAKOAH v SOUTH COAST

Match Report as printed in Soccer World April 4 1969

By Lou Gautier

"Hakoah, despite a slight improvement made hard work of their victory and almost failed to survive South Coast's spirited late rally to force a draw. The match only came to life in the second half after Baartz's two magnificent goals put Hakoah ahead. Hakoah then showed glimpses of their best form until a foolish own goal triggered a South Coast revival. Hakoah's defence was on tenderhooks in the last 15 minutes and the visitors could have forced a draw in the dying stages with better finishing. With a Baartz in their forward line South Coast would have scored a comfortable win despite Hakoah's improved showing"

Coaches Comment

Doug Holden (Hakoah) : "Hakoah's improvement was heartening and the win should boost the players morale. I expect further improvement and am confident Hakoah will soon be the team it was last season. Our bad spell should be well and truly over."

Tommy Anderson (South Coast United) : "I think we showed we will test the best this season. With a bit of luck we could have forced a draw. We should improve further in coming weeks."

POLONIA v PRAGUE

Match Report as printed in Soccer World April 4 1969

By Eddie Evans

"Prague, playing smooth football didn't take long to get on top of an unfit, painfully slow Polonia. With practically the first kick of the match Blanco lobbed goalward from 40 yards. Fraser caught the ball, then dropped it behind him into the net. Polonia never quite recovered even though they did equalise through sheer determination. Prague, creating six chances to one, completely dominated the second half and hit home four lovely goals while Polonia ran out of steam as the match progressed. In all, a lively one-sided match where Prague confirmed their glowing potential, especially during a 20-minute second half spell."

Coaches Comment

Leopold Baumgartner (Polonia) : "The team still isn't fit and needs much more match practise. I'm confident we'll come right before long as there is potential in the team."

Joe Venglos (Prague) : "Prague played some spectacular football, especially in the second half when our forwards capitalised on their many chances. All our young players came through with flying colours."

YUGAL-RYDE v ST. GEORGE BUDAPEST

Match Report as printed in Soccer World April 4 1969

by Paul Dean

"This was a veritable knock-out by a devestating St. George-Budapest against a dismal Yugal. The Saints, intelligently deployed, dominated every inch of the lush turf. They flung the ball around with purpose and, in front of goal, were deadly. It has been years since a Sydney team turned on such a formidable display. Not one of the St. George players performed below par - but special mention must be made of Yardley's fantastic double hat-trick, teh result of lethal shooting, and of the immaculate midfield game of a completely rejuvinated Cliss. Yugal were outclassed and badly outplayed but, to their credit, never gave up the chase."

Coaches Comment

Ferdo Dunaj (Yugal) : "I simply have no players, you saw what these are capable of. Today we would have lost even if we had played with 13 men. Wonderful game by the Saints."

Frank Arok (St. George Budapest) : "I hope nobody expects us to score as many as that every week. Yugal were obvioucly under strength. Still, show me a coach who wouldn't be happy after an 11-1?"

CANTERBURY v PAN HELLENIC

Match Report as printed in Soccer World April 4 1969

by Lou Gautier

"An absolute thriller which provided something to suit every taste - atmosphere, high drama, fluctuating fortunes, a missed penalty, plenty of good football and a pacific invasion of the field by spectators when both teams scored their second goal within the space of a minute. Though a draw was a fair result overall, Pan Hellenic were rather helped along by two harsh penalties, the second of which put them on level terms after Povey had missed the first. Transformed by Greek newcomer, Papaemanuel, the best man on the field, Canterbury played the more thoughtful football and had the best of the play with the exception of the first 25 minutes of the second half."

Coaches Comment

George Azzopardi (Canterbury) : "A good result for us. Our players aren't all fit yet, but once they are and acquire more punch in attack Canterbury will surprise many teams."

Michael Jones (Pan Hellenic) : "I wasn't impressed by the refereeing but am quite happy with the result and the way the team played. I have misgivings about Canterbury's second goal. Goalie Clarke was fouled and interfered with."

APIA v CROATIA

Match Report as printed in Soccer World April 4 1969

by Keith Gilmour

"APIA's supporters got value for money in this game. Whenever Croatia looked dangerous APIA lifted their game to give a commanding performance in the crucial periods. Blue's magnificent goal capped a most constructive game for him. Keith showed that his purchase is fully justified, being rarely faulted in defence or attack. The same can be said of Craotia's Melbourne capture Tommy Randles, who distributed beautifully on Lambert Park's thick carpet of green. Croatia's younger members worked hard until the last 10 minutes, but it was the experience of Corry, Randles, Shepherd and Reynolds that kept them in the game."

Coaches Comment

Adauto Iglesias (APIA) : "We had a reasonable margin. If all the close shots were counted we did extra well. A most encouraging start."

Laurie Hegyes (Croatia) : "Three or four weeks of hard conditioning will build up our side quite a lot more. I can't complain about our performance nor the result."

AUBURN v MELITA EAGLES

Match Report as printed in Soccer World April 4 1969

by Charles Spiteri

"Though not the best of games technically, the small crowd present got their money's worth from quite a few thrills and plenty of spills. Melita Eagles took off, at break-neck speed and within minutes they had the ball into their opponents nmet but referee Jones disallowed the goal. The Eagles kept up the pressure and after two near misses by Thorne, Azzopradi socred with a well angled shot that bounced off the net into play. Melita, then surprisingly, slowed down to a crawl and Auburn took control and first O'Neill and then Moffatt scored good goals to put Auburn in front. After the interval Auburn made the mistake of defending and Melita justly equalised."

Coaches Comment

Ziggy Nowacki (Auburn) : "After a good display in the first half Auburn were too slow in the second period and allowed Melita to take the initiative and come back into the game. We should have led at least 3-1 at the break."

Trevor Edwards (Melita Eagles) : "The only comment I can make is that I am pleased with the way the boys fought back in the second half to share the points. I expect further improvement soon."
