The Australian Olympic football team (Olyroos) jumped back into the Olympics with their first win and their first three points in the Tournament. It was clear from the beginning that this was a game that nobody wanted to lose.

The Saudis pushed the ball around the park but did not take advantage of their attacking moments. The breakthrough came after only 11 minutes. VIDMAR (AUS) shielded the ball in the penalty area, with his back to the goal, he pushed the ball out to TSEKENIS (AUS) , who on his second attempt scored with a hard, past the keeper. The Saudis soon pressured, getting close on various occasions. The equaliser came in the 37th minute with a close range header by AL-KILAIWI (KSA). As both sides continues to miss chances, the first half ended 1-1.

Both teams came out knowing that this game was their only chance. The Australians had a storybook second half with both a winning goal and a penalty save. The second goal was by VIDUKA (AUS), who scored with a clever back flick past the Saudi keeper. The penalty save was a classic. In the 67th minute, Aussie keeper Juric FRANK (AUS) waited for AMIN's (KSA) kick and outstretched, pushed the ball to his right side.

More action came from both sides, as Australia pulled back to defend. It ended at 2-1, and the Australians stayed alive.
