Slowly the dust was being blown off the Olympic team as the 2004 qualifiers draw nearer. A visit by Chilean club side Colo Colo provided an opportunity for a hit-out. Looks like the 4th official would have got sore arms from all the substitutions.

Having picked mostly local players for the games against Colo Colo Frank Farina tested his overseas players in a camp (with 2 matches) based in Germany. The first match was against the Bayer Leverkusen youth side. The last Australian goal was probably scored by Gareth Edds according to reports but is officially credited to Richard Garcia.

Everything up until this point suggested that Australia was going to be playing its second match against Cameroon. Then when the press release came out they had just played the full Mannheim side from the 2nd Bundesliga. The apparent cause was visa problems for the Cameroon players, so an alternative match was hastily arranged.
