National Youth League (Southern Division), 11-12 October 1997
by Roy Hay
Bulleen and Bentleigh Greens had narrow one-nil wins over Albury Wodonga
and Heidelberg United respectively on Saturday. This was Albury Wodonga's
first game in the NYL after winning the Vic Health Youth League in 1996-7
and the boys from the border impressed Bulleen's Frank Ruffolo. "It was a
fair game and they are not a bad side", he said. The only goal came from
Paul Salvatore and the best Bulleen players included stopper Nathan Thomas,
midfielder Berkan Sakaci and striker Mimo Orlando.
Bentleigh Greens survived the loss of Stefan Oter for his second bookable
offence to beat Heidelberg. Abdul Haidar scored the winner in the 78th
minute.
The lights went out at Paisley Park after 66 minutes leaving Altona Magic
and South Melbourne Rockets locked at one-all. Altona had the better of
the first half but the Rockets were firing when the game had to be
abandoned. Steve Bogdanovski scored for the Magic in 31 minutes and Aytec
Yilmaz replied in 65.
South Melbourne took an early lead against the run of play and the
Melbourne Knights, but the Knights came back strongly to win by three goals
to one. Robert Liparotti sprung James Kasikakis for the first goal for
the Blues after 32 minutes following a period of Knights' dominance. Just
after the hour, Mijo Trupkovic crossed and John Kalabric had an
unchallenged header for the equaliser. When South Melbourne conceded a
free kick just beyond the corner of the penalty area Damien Vojtek threaded
it past the wall and keeper Theo Patsiotis. John Kalabric rounded off the
scoring in 88 minutes.
National Youth League (Northern Division), 10-12 October 1997
Wollongong Wolves and the Queensland Academy of Sport played a nil-all draw
at Win Stadium last Friday night. It was a very even match and both teams
had chances to score. Star player was young QAS goalkeeper Graham Ross,
with a number of fine saves. QAS coach Gary Phillips said afterwards "A
draw was a fair result".
Newcastle Breakers beat the NSW Institute of Sport by five goals to three
at Valentine Park in what must have been one of the most exciting games so
far. Daniel Watkins put the Institute ahead in ten minutes, and Greg
Owens replied a minute later, only for Watkins to strike again in thirteen
minuts. When Simon Catanzaro scored just before the break it looked as if
Newcastle was gone, but a second half fight back with goals by Owens again,
then Peter Jakowicz, Chris Tancevski and Shane Gowan gave the Breakers
victory.
Marconi Fairfield and the ACT Academy of Sport drew one-all at Marconi
Stadium on Saturday. The Marconi Colts went one better with a three-one
win away to Sydney United.
