National Youth League (Southern Division), 3-4 January 1198
by Roy Hay

The Victorian Institute of Sport and Gippsland Falcons drew one-all at Kim
Reserve on Saturday. Boris Ovcin's cross was expertly dispatched by
striker Zoran Petrevski after 35 minutes and the VIS dominated the first
half. Ovcin's performance was noteworthy because he broke his nose early
in the match but played on bravely. Gippsland came back after the
interval with Brian McNichol pulling the strings and deservedly equalised
with a penalty kick in 80 minutes, converted by Billy Mitroulas. Adrian
Cuzzupe was the outstanding player for the VIS.

An own goal by Bentleigh Greens gave Albury Wodonga its third win of the
season in very hot conditions in Albury. Menzies and Pizzini starred for
the home team and Wilkinson and Kourkoutzelos were the pick of the Greens.
The home team was on top early, but the Greens finished strongly but just
could not score.

It took Melbourne Knights till virtually the last kick of the first half to
break through against Heidelberg United, but then the floodgates opened and
the Knights added five second half goals. The game was notable for some
extraordinary misses. Adis Kablar scored a hat-trick for the Knights but
could have had six, including one effort from just under the cross bar
which rose to hit the woodwork. For Heidelberg, Wasame Yusif had a fine
run and shot which was parried by Steve Pavlovic but straight to Tony
Ouliaris who was inside the goal area unmarked. Somehow Ouliaris scooped
the ball over the bar. Kablar thumped home a shot from an oblique angle
for the best of his three goals, then John Kalabric twice lifted the ball
over defenders before volleying home for a quite outrageous goal. Michael
Bosevski buried a penalty kick and Damon Collina was put through by Ivan
Razov for the final goal.

The match between the two South Melbourne teams will be played on 25
January and Carlton used its bye to play a match against its own Colts
team.

National Youth League (Northern Division), 3-5 January 1998

Newcastle Breakers conceded an early own goal and eventually went down by
two goals to one at home to Marconi Fairfield. Peter Juchniewicz
equalised for the Breakers but Eduardo Pellegrino grabbed a late winner for
Marconi.

Queensland Academy of Sport and the New South Wales Institute were locked
scoreless in the first half, only for Royce Brownlie to score the only goal
in the second half to give QAS its victory.

Sydney United Colts beat UTS Olympic Colts by four goals to one. Tony
Krslovic contributed a hat-trick in 5, 40 and 60 minutes and Michael Clare
scored the fourth in 24 minutes. Philip Marzec replied for Olympic Colts
after 28 minutes.

Wollongong City had a comfortable three-nil win over Marconi Fairfield
Colts at Marconi Stadium. The first half was quite even, though
Wollongong managed two goals through Noel Spenser after 31 minutes and Cane
Maccabi after 40. Thereafter the Colts tried to chase the game and was
caught late on by Paul Tuturevski for a third goal to the Wolves.
