National Youth League (Southern Division), 20-22 December 1997
by Roy Hay
Albury Wodonga scored a two-one away win to Altona Magic on Saturday.
Quentin O'Grady got the visitor away to a fine start with a goal after only
five minutes, but Steve Markovski equalised in 23 minutes. The winner
came right on the stroke of half-time from John Tudor.
The VIS had a comfortable seven-nil win over Heidelberg United marked by
four goals from striker Zoran Petrevski. He started proceedings with a
goal in 20 mintues, but Heidelberg restricted the VIS to that goal until
Boris Ovcin popped up with the first of his double in 42 minutes and Pat
Arcuri sealed the result with a third just on the interval. Petrevski cut
loose late in the second half with three goals inside sixteen minutes in
72, 82 and 88, and there was time for Ovcin to score his second in the last
minute.
Carlton downed South Melbourne by two goals to nil at Optus Oval in the
curtain raiser to the big game which attracted over 10,000 fans. Just on
the half hour Steve Martin's corner found David Della Rocca at the far post
and his powerful downward header was touched over the line by Daniel
Allsopp from close range. Tass Psonis came close for South Melbourne with
a long drive which Adrian Cagalj had to tip over the bar. Carlton pushed
David Grbac up into midfield and when Allsopp challenged the keeper for
Paul Williams' cross, Grbac was unmarked at the far post to score Carlton's
second. Youngster Denis Ekici promoted from the Colts team came on for
his second appearance for the senior youth team.
Gippsland Falcons overpowered South Melbourne Rockets by six goals to one
at Bob Jane Stadium with two goals from Archie Thompson and singles from
Marcus Wallace, Luke Cheney, Paul Byrne and John Hutchinson. Aytec Yilmaz
put the Rockets ahead in the third minute, but thereafter Gippsland was in
control after Thompson got his first five minutes later.
Melbourne Knights beat Bulleen Inter by two goals to one. All the goals
came in the second half, with Damon Collina breaking the drought in 67
minutes only for Michael Gullino to get Bulleen on terms two minutes later.
Matthew Govic scored the winner with five minutes left to play.
National Youth League (Northern Division), 20-22 December 1997
The Australian Institute of Sport beat the News South Wales Institute by
two goals to nil. Mile Sterjovski after 21 minutes and Marc Bresciano in
61 were the scorers.
Newcastle Breakers and UTS Olympic drew two-all in Newcastle. All the
goals came in the first half, with Greg Owen opening for Newcastle in 27
minutes and Michael ??? adding a second in 32. Leo Carle pulled one back
a couple of minutes later, then tied the scores from the penalty spot in
43.
Joe Bruni's goal on the half-hour gave Marconi Fairfield a narrow away win
over the Sydney United Colts.
On Sunday Sydney United and Wollongong City drew two-all. Tony Krslovic
scored both goals for Sydney United and these were cancelled out by strikes
from Colin Luff and Christian Zelvis.
A Mark Haggar hat-trick took Marconi Colts to a three-two win over UTS
Olympic Colts. Liam Austin had put Olympic Colts ahead in 9 minutes and P
Nazam also got on the scoresheet for Olympic.
