Carlton suffered its first defeat of the season away to Gippsland Falcons
on Saturday. Adrian Savage scored the only goal nine minutes into the
second half, after a close and tightly fought game. The Falcons have
proved to be a formidable force on their own ground and the win lifts them
to equal top on points with Carlton and Melbourne Knights.

The Melbourne Knights had a comfortable five nil win over Bentleigh Greens
on Friday. The first half saw Adis Kablar climb above the defence, so
high that the ball went in off his shoulder, for the only goal of that
half. Substitute Mathew Govic scored with his second touch in only his
third game for the Knights, then man-of-the-match Daniel Radosevic made it
three, before Govic scored again. The final goal was a beauty as Hrvoje
Matkovic ran on to a low cross from Mijo Trupkovic.

The Victorian Institute of Sport had a five-one away win over Bulleen
Inter, which came at great cost with injuries to Billy Petrovski, Mustafa
Mustafa and Joey Di Iorio. Petrovski opened the scoring for the VIS, but
Bulleen equalised five minutes later, then defender Serhat Hulusi came up
to score again for the VIS. Not to be outdone his fellow stopper Ljubo
Milicevic came up to put away a header and striker Zoran Petrevski got the
next one, before Boris Ovcin scored the last goal. Young Naum Sekulovski
, one of the latest additions to the VIS squad seems like a terrific
prospect.

South Melbourne Rockets and Heidelberg United drew one-all at Bob Jane Stadium.

National Youth League (Northern Division), 13-14 December 1997

Queensland Academy of Sport defeated Marconi Fairfield by three goals to
nil on Saturday. After a scoreless and even first half, Royce Brownlie
opened for the QAS in 58 minutes and Morgan Cawley and Aaron Thiesfield
scored two quick goals in 62 and 65 minutes to settle the result.

Marconi Fairfield Colts took the lead against the NSW Institute of Sport
through M Galluzzo in 38 minutes and eventually won by two goals to one.
Mark Haggar scored just after the hour but a goal in the last minute by
Derek Kane gave the Institute some reward for their contribution to an
excellent game.

The ACT Academy of Sport and Newcastle Breakers could not be separated
after ninety minutes of soccer and the game ended goal-less, though both
sides had numerous shots on goal.

UTS Olympic Colts and Sydney United drew two-all with goals for Olympic by
Philip Apostalidis and Sam Nizam.

UTS Olympic then overcame Sydney United Colts by three goals to nil. Jim
Bakis put Olympic ahead early and Leo Carle scored from the spot early in
the second half. Kevo Gulesserian completed the scoring for Olympic in 81
minutes.

In a postponed Round One match the AIS defeated Wollongong City by six
goals to one. Mile Sterjovski collected another hat-trick, after Paul
Tuturevski had put Wollongong ahead in four minutes. Ante Duer equalised,
then Mark Bresciano gave the AIS a two-one lead before the first two of
Sterjovski's goals. Vic Tomasevic got one just after the break and
Sterjovski finished the scoring in 82 minutes.
