National Youth League (Southern Division), 4-5 October 1997
by Roy Hay
Carlton opened its first match in the National Youth League with a goal
inside the first minute from Nick Tolios against Altona Magic. From the
kick-off the ball went back to sweeper Ivica Klarica, who sent Andy Vargas
away on the elft. Vargas sprinted forward and his cross was accurately
fed into the path of Tolios, who scored from close range. Vargas pulled
the strings in midfield for Carlton, which dominated the first half.
After forty-one minutes Carlton extended its lead as Adam Pongho shot hit
the post and had just crossed the line before Jovanco Novacevski got a foot
to the ball, according to referee Dominic Barba.
Bulleen had a two-one win over Bentleigh Greens at Kingston Heath. Frank
Melino scored for the Greens and Mathew Collina got both Bulleen's goals,
the first from a penalty.
Carlton hope to reschedule its match with the VIS for Saturday.
National Youth League (Northern Division), 4-5 October 1997
Queensland Academy of Sport kicked off the Northern Division with a
five-nil win over UTS Olympic Colts marked by double strikes for Angelo
Coots and Rees Tolleneare and one goal by Daniel Invincible.
Sydney United Colts conceded two goals to the New South Wales Institute of
Sport, with Simon Catanzaro and Daniel Watkins scoring in the first half.
The Colts had their keeper sent off somewhat harshly according to reports,
but the ten men including the substitute keeper held their opponents
scoreless in the second half, and indeed looked more like scoring
themselves.
The ACT Academy of Soccer and Sydney United drew two-all, with Daniel
Kukucka and Robert Angievski on target for United.
UTS Olympic got a flying start with a goal by Andrew McKiernan in the first
minute against Marconi. Leo Carlio and Steve Karavatakis added further
goals before Joe Bruni pulled one back for Marconi in the second half, but
Olympic was well worth the victory.
