Former Victory defender Sebastian Ryall has scored a 90th minutes equaliser against his former club to end the encounter 2-2.
Isaka Cernak and Fabio gave the hosts a first-half lead before Bruno Cazarine and then Ryall in stoppage time equalised. Victory however won't feel too good after having a host of chances and holding the lead for most of the second-half.
After Victory's 4-1 defeat to Perth Glory Jim Magilton made four changes with Rodrigo Vargas, Marco Rojas, Matthew Kemp and Leigh Broxham making way for Fabio, new signing Mark Milligan, Grant Brebner and Carlos Hernandez. Sydney coach Vitezslav Lavicka made one change with the injured Terry Antonis making way for Bruno Cazarine.
Victory started off with a fast tempo with Harry Kewell down the left but his cross was cleared before Isaka Cernak could get onto it by Scott Jamieson.
In the first twenty minutes neither side could create any clear cut chances however Sydney did try some long range efforts from Cazarine and Nick Carle.
Archie Thompson could have made a great chance but his first touch was awful after Kewell robbed the ball off Terry McFlynn.
On 24 minutes Mark Bridge got in a great position and shot straight at Ante Covic in goals but the experienced 'keeper fumbled the ball before the Victory defence cleared.
Two minutes later Carle curled an effort from the edge of the box but Matthew Foschini got in the way and blocked.
Carlos Hernandez next put in a curling free-kick only for Rhyan Grant to miss the clearance. Kewell was at the back post but failed to put his shot on target.
Cazarine then turned just inside his opponent's box but his effort was too weak to trouble Covic.
Just before half-time first-half substitute Hirofumi Moriyasu burst into the box before crossing for Karol Kisel but the midfielder's left foot shot was saved by Covic.
Right on half-time Isaka Cernak opened the scoring. Foschini put in a great ball before Thompson touched down for Cernak whose left footed finish was smashed into the bottom corner.
Two minutes later Victory pounced on Kisel's poor clearance to score two goals in three minutes. Fabio broke down the left beating two defenders before shooting from an acute angle. The effort subsequently flicked off Liam Reddy for Fabio to score his first A-League goal.
In the opening minute of the second-half Thompson was played in by a long Arian Leijer ball and was one-on-one with Reddy but the 'keeper was victorious with a great save.
Sydney skipper McFlynn was next to test Covic but his long effort was comfortably saved by the former Socceroo goalkeeper.
Cazarine then jumped out Milligan but the Brazilian's header went wide.
On 55 minutes Victory could have extended the lead but after Hernandez was played in by Thompson the Costa Rican shot wide while off balance.
Only one minute later the Sky Blues scored one goal back. Carle's initial effort was spilled by Covic which was subsequently finished by Cazarine.
Carle was causing havoc through the centre and played in Bridge but his strike was fired over.
On 67 minutes Fabio was looking for his second. The Brazilian's free-kick was saved fantastically by Reddy in goals for Sydney.
Bridge next tried his chances to score an equaliser but his effort from the left side of the box was saved once again by Covic.
Second-half substitute Marco Rojas came on with some energy and took a shot on target but Reddy saved comfortably.
With eight minutes left Jamieson curled in a great free-kick but as Covic couldn't get to it the ball drifted just wide.
Fabio next put in a great corner only for Reddy to punch which the ball then fell for Rojas but the Kiwi winger put his strike over from 5 yards out.
88th minute substitute and former Melbourne Victory defender Sebastian Ryall snatched a point for the visitors. Jamieson's free-kick fell for Ryall who picked home on 90 minutes to score his first goal of his career.
Victory jump back to seventh after Adelaide's point over Newcastle whereas Sydney temporarily stays in the top six.
Melbourne Victory coach Jim Magilton believed his side probably deserved the late equaliser by Ryall. "I think we probably deserved it. Credit goes to Sydney for keep going, they kept pushing. I think it was a bit of naivety on our part, obviously it is a confidence thing and it will be nice to win ugly. It was just a confidence thing and we need to break that down."
"Tonight I think we played a good quality but at the end of the first-half we lost the concentration and a good quality opponent punished us twice. They were very close to scoring a third one in the second-half but they didn't and I think we were still alive and we got one and came back into the game. I think the boys did a quite good performance today. At the end we put up an extra strong player up front and we scored and we scored a lucky goal."
