Heart v Mariners

A-League report by Daniel Quinn
Melbourne Heart v Central Coast Mariners

Central Coast Mariners have stolen all three points at the death to defeat Melbourne Heart 1-0 at AAMI Park on Wednesday night.

Matt Ryan made many great saves to earn man of the match honours which was followed up with Adam Kwasnik's 89th minute winner.

Melbourne Heart made three changes after their defeat to Perth Glory on Sunday with Mate Dugandzic and Eli Babalj having a rest with David Williams and Alex Terra coming in. Dugandzic is joined on the bench by Kristian Sarkies who makes way for Jonatan Germano. Pedj Bojic returns from suspension in place for Brad Porter which is the only change for the Central Coast Mariners.

Melbourne Heart started with a fast tempo and created the first chance on 4 minutes when Aziz Behich put in a great cross for Jason Hoffman. But the Olyroo headed straight into the hands of Ryan.

Alex Terra was played in next by Hoffman but the Brazilian's right footed effort was well saved by Ryan.

Terra was causing havoc cutting in from the left about half through the half and shot a long ranged effort which was deflected and then smashed off the upright after beating Ryan.

On 31 minutes Ryan made a brilliant save to deny Behich's downward header after Rutger Worm's great cross.

Five minutes before half-time Central Coast registered the first effort on target when Patrick Zwaanswijk headed straight into Clint Bolton without testing the 'keeper.

Early into the second-half Alex Terra put in a fantastic chip through ball to Worm which the Dutch forward shot well on the volley but Ryan once again saved brilliantly.

Only two minutes after Worm's effort Alex Terra tried his chances but Ryan was in the way to keep it scoreless.

On 59 minutes Pedj Bojic made a great run forward for the visitors and shot with the outside of his foot but Bolton got down quickly to saved for the Heart.

Five minutes later Michael Marrone made a great run on the right before crossing for Behich but the wide man's effort was easily saved.

Almost immediately Alex Terra cut in from the left before shooting but his effort was hit straight at the inform Ryan.

Heart continued to push at a high tempo for a winner but Ryan saved Worm's header off Sarkies' corner.

Heart pushed and pushed for a winner and should have had it on 80 minutes. First Alex Terra tried to chip Ryan from distance but the ball was skied over Ryan's net.

Worm then shot from outside of the box with his left foot but Ryan again parried to deny the Dutchman.

At the resulting Sarkies corner Curtis Good scrambled the effort towards goal but the ball hit Worm in the head before it was cleared. Heart weren't having any luck in front of goal with Ryan putting in a man of the match performance.

In the last minute of normal time Kwasnik snatched all three points for the visitors with an easy finish at the far post after Michael McGlinchey's great cross.

The Mariners remain undefeated now for 14 games, with Heart without a win in four games.

Melbourne Heart coach John van 't Schip thought he side was unlucky to lose the game. "Yes we were (unlucky), we had really good opportunities to score but we didn't finish it off. I think the main thing from this evening is that we played well in big parts of the game and we didn't give away hardly anything then to lose the game in the end is very hard since we played well. I can only give good compliments to the boys who put in good efforts but it was not good enough to get three points"."

Central Coast Mariners coach Graham Arnold thought that they didn't deserve the win. "We got three points we probably didn't deserve. You got to be honest, Heart were the better side, they had more chances, were the better side and I told the boys after the game that I am not happy. Yeah you got three points but it's not the performance I want".

"The kid next to me (Matt Ryan) won it for us tonight. Maybe it's a good sign that you don't play well and you win games".

Arnold went onto say that "I wouldn't be happy if I was Melbourne Heart," showing that Heart should have taken all three points.
