Jets v Gold Coast

A-League report by Robert Szomolnocki
Newcastle United Jets v Gold Coast United

The Newcastle Jets continue to fly up the ladder with an impressive 2-0 win over Gold Coast United with a truly inspired performance against one of the A-League high flyers. It took late goals from Abbas and Petrovski to seal the win. That is now seven games unbeaten for the Jets.

The action started early as Zadkovich’s cross falls to Abbas who can’t quite hit it in

Gold Coast respond when Caravella steals the ball and tees up Van Den Brink but his shot is soft and straight at Nash.

Then Fiorentini making a rare start fires a volley just over the cross bar for the home team.

The Jets have the early possession with the Gold Coast relying on quick counter attacks

The Jets have two great opportunities to score in 60 seconds both falling to Jeffers, On 25 minutes Jeffers is played in on goal by Jesic, he has only has Moss to beat but Moss saves and a minute later its Jeffers again with another golden chance he turns Djulbic and has only Moss to beat but again his shot from close range is blocked.

On 38 minutes Jesic’s shot is blocked the ball falls to Fiorentini his strike is saved by Moss

On the stroke of half time a Jesic free kick he hits a 25 meter effort but the wall does its job its 0-0 and during the break the fans are still wondering how Jeffers missed those two sitters.

The second half commences with a beautiful Abbas left foot curling shot from the edge of the penalty area that is going into the far top corner but somehow Moss gets a hand to it, pushes it on to the cross bar the ball bounces directly down, the ball appears to go over the line but the referee waves play on , on the replay it clearly shows the ball bouncing on the line and then out. So well done to the officials and to Moss for the save of the season.

On 54 minutes Trarore is put through, he chips Nash from a tight angle but Topor-Stanley heads clear

Super sub Petrovski is on and he immediately fires one at goal, but its straight at the goal keeper.

There is 20 minutes remaining and the visitors are still in this one, Trarore finds Djite who hits a curling shot which is going into the far top corner this time its Nash pulling off an amazing save.

A clever one two has Porter in space at the edge of the area, he chips it just over the cross bar.

Finally, finally.... Milcevic wins possession at the edge of the penalty area, he finds Abbas who smashes home its 1-0 Jets on 77 minutes

One minute later Milicevic turns from hero to villain he cops a second yellow card and is sent off for a foul just outside the area, the tension builds as the free kick is taken by Trarore but Porter heads over the cross bar

The game is sealed when a Wehrman free kick is saved by Moss, Petrovski is quickest to the rebound and fires home from a sharp angle it finishes 2-0 Jets.

The Jets fans give their team a standing ovation at the final whistle.
