Jets v Roar

A-League report by Robert Szomolnocki
Newcastle United Jets v Brisbane Roar

The Newcastle Jets are still waiting to register their first A-League win this season after they drew 0-0 with the Brisbane Roar in a keenly contested match at Energy Stadium Australia.

Both teams pressed hard for a winner in the final stages, but in the end neither side could force a winner.

The opening period saw the Roar dominate possession with a clever passing game, whenever the Jets did win the ball they resorted to quick long balls to Bridges and Jesic but these were easily cut out by Smith and Devere

It was the Jets who created the first chance, Bridges on the edge of the area fires a goal bound effort that Theoklitos does well to save.

On the half hour Milicevic tries to add some spark to the game as he goes on a long run down the middle of the park, just as he is about to provide a through pass he is brought down by Paartalu who receives a yellow card. From the resulting free kick Jesic blasts one but it ends wide.

The Roar have their best opportunity when Henrique makes it to the by line and sends in a cross, but it is cleverly headed back to his own goal keeper by Wehrman.

Whilst the first half was dour the second half exploded into life as both teams went for a winning goal.

Reinaldo commences the second half with a deflected shot from outside the area. On 52 minutes he is even closer as he heads a Mckay corner onto the cross bar with Kennedy beaten.

On 68 minutes sees the introduction of subs Abbas and Shuo for the home side while the visitors introduce Murdocca, the tempo of the game increases and Shuo first touch of the ball has Elrich clear on goal but he blasts one across the face of the goal and Brockie falls to get a decisive touch.

On 77 minutes Henrique makes space from 25 meters but his fine effort is wide of the near post.

Two minutes later Abbas twists and turns two defenders but his goal bound shot is well saved by Theoklitos.

The game ends with a Milicevic/ Bridges one – two that has the big defender on goal but he can’t manage a winning goal…it ends 0-0.
