Jets v Glory

A-League report by Robert Szomolnoki
Newcastle United Jets v Perth Glory

Perth Glory played terribly, they only managed one credible shot on goal but still came away with all 3 points as Mile Sterjovski with ten minutes remaining in the game was able to get to the ball in the penalty area before the advancing Ben Kennedy and was brought down, he took the penalty and scored. The Jets have now lost three in a row and can only blame themselves as they had the majority of possession.

Matt Thmpson become the first player to play 100 games in the A-League, he has missed just one game since the start of the A-League, sadly the second lowest crowd in Jets history were in attendance to watch as a major Rugby League semi-final was being broadcast live at the same time on television.

The Glory had all three Socceroos on deck as Burns passed a late fitness test and the Jets had De Groot starting for the first time.

The game starts off with end to end opportunites on 3 mins Burns fires a volley wide of the upright for the visitors, and Haliti responds for the Jets from the edge of the penalty area, Velaphi makes a diving save.

Patafta finds Song on 7 minutes he slips through two dfenders but fires straight at Velaphi who saves. Ten minutes later Patafta is able to get past three defenders but he slices his shot and the ball goes wide.

On 28 mins Jelic blasts a loose ball in the middle of the park from 30 meters which Kennedy dives to save .

The Jets have the majority of possession Vignaroli who had been very quite makes a 25 meter dash towards the Perth goal as the defenders finally come to him he un leashes a shot that is deflected for the first Jets corner. Vignaroli finds Topor-Stanley but his header is well wide, he still awaits his first A-league goal.

As the first half ends Haliti brilliantly makes space at the edge of the penalty area, he turns Todd and fires towards goal but the ball hits the upright and bounces out, then minutes later he races down the left hand side and crosses for Song who heads the ball wide from in front of goal. This summed up the Jets, good midfield play but poor finishing.

The second half has Sterjovski racing away at the Jets goal but he is surrounded by four Jets defenders and loses possession, Perth in the second half showed no urgency to go forward. They were happy to sit back.

On 56 minutes Patafta is still rounding defenders as he 290 metre run is stopped at the edge of the penalty area. With 18 minutes remaining Song tries a overhead but Velaphi makes a diving save. Then the Iraqi international Abbas comes on, he imediately makes in roads and delivers a pin point cross to Song who is disposed in front of goal.

Then Sterjovski with ten minutes remaining in the game was able to get to the ball in the penalty area before the advancing Ben Kennedy and was brought down, a penalty is given, he smashes the ball against the under side of the cross bar and it bounces in. its 1-0 Perth. The Jets try to level in the remaining minutes but they really can't create a chance. Perth amazingly win but they defended well in numbers.
