Jets v Adelaide

A-League report by Robert Szomolnoki
Newcastle United Jets v Adelaide United

A last second Sasa Ognenovski header saw Adelaide grab a point at Energy Australia Stadium. It appeared Jets goal keeper Ante Covic was to be the local hero, as he had pulled off a string of outstanding saves, including a double save from Travis Dodd just four minutes from full time, but it was Covic who was caught off his goal line as a last second free kick was headed by Ognenovski over Covic into an unguarded net.

For much of the first half the inexperiencd Jets forwards Jesic and Naidovski were well contained by the well organised Adelaide defence in particular Ognenovski and Costanzo . Goal scoring chances were certainly rare. Adelaide relied on counter attacks but their final passes were cut out by Jets defenders.

On 10 minutes Adam D'Apuzzo has the first attempt of the game but from 25 meters the shot is soft and along the ground. On 24 minutes Scott Jamieson has the first attempt on goal for the visitors but Covic saves.

The Jets should have taken the lead on 27 minutes from a corner North heads on to Holland who from right in front of goal mis kicks but the ball is still going in and it needs Jamieson to clear of the goal line.

Just before half time Travis Dodd is clear of the defence but his fierce cross misses everyone and no one can tap in. The Jets respond with Matt Thompson clear on goal he makes it to the six yard box and holds the ball up brilliantly despite the close attention of Adelaide defenders he tees up Jesic right in front of goal and amazingly from in front and ten meters out Jesic fires wide of the goal.

The second half begins at a faster tempo, and its end to end stuff on 56 minutes Costanzo in a festive mood back heels straight to Naidovski who passes to Matt Thompson in front of goal and he fires a shot that goes in of the near upright 1-0 Jets. In the next minute Jesic fires in a cross that Kantarovski only has to tap in but the cross goes behind him and every player misses the ball.

The visitors then step up the pace and push forward for an equaliser. On 72 minutes Alemao is through on goal and has only Covic to beat, he appears to round Covic but as he is about to score Covic dives on the ball.

With nine minutes remaining the Jets should have wrapped the game up Jesic finds Holland who back heels for Hakansson who only has Galekovic to beat, but the Dane who has plenty of time rushes his shot and blasts over the cross bar from in front of goal.

With four minutes remaining Dodd looks certained to score but Covic saves, the rebounds goes back to Dodd who pokes the ball goal bound but Covic is able to get his body in the way.

Then came the final dramatic seconds a free kick is floated into the Jets penalty area and Ognenovski climb above everyone and head into an empty net, Covic is caught in no mans land, it ends 1-1.
