A-League report by Robert Szomolnoki
Newcastle United Jets v Queensland Roar

The Qld Roar continue to win away from home this season notching another away win, this time at Newcastle this despite Joel Grifffiths scoring for the seventh game in a row for the Jets against Qld Roar.

Something had to give, the Jets were unbeaten at home while the Roar were unbeaten away, in the end it was the failure of the Jets to prize open the stubborn Qld Roar defence who repealed wave after wave of repeated Jets attacks.

It was the Jets who almost commenced with a dream start with a floated Wheelhouse free kick that finds Zura in the penalty area his header beats Reddy but the goal is disallowed - correctly so as Zura was standing in an offside position when the free kick was taken. Murdocca then breaks away while the Jets players are celebrating the goal, he makes to the Jets penalty area before a Jets defender comes rear him but he finishes with a tame shot.

On 10 minutes Zura finds Joel Griffiths he is bearing down on goal and unleashes a shot that finishes just wide of the far upright.

The Roar respond when Murdocca fires a shot from outside the penalty area that has Covic diving to his right. A minute later and the busy Miller finds Murdocca who fires against the upright, the ball bounces to Miller, his cross is headed by Smit and Covic makes another good save. Miller then tries a 30 meter lob on Covic but he is alert and is able to make the save.

On 22 minutes Zura finds Joel Griffiths on the edge of the penalty area Joel curves the ball around McCloughan and into the corner of the net its 1-0 Jets and seven in a row for Joel against the Roar.

60 seconds later the Roar are level Van Dyke finds Murdocca his cross finds McKay who smashes the ball in from close range, its 1-1. The home crowd quickly go quiet many still celebrating the opening goal.

On 29 minutes Song puts Joel Griffiths through on goal, at the point of connecting with his final shot McCloughan gets in a telling touch and the ball is deflected wide.

Murdocca on 34 minutes beats Wheelhouse and his cross is headed on by Smit who heads on to Miller who taps in unmarked at the far post, its Song who is guilty of ball watching, its 2-1 Roar.

60 seconds later it's the Jets who are almost level as Joel Griffiths fires a shot across the face of the goal on the turn.

Half time saw the visitors ahead 2-1.

The second half commenced with another Joel Griffiths run at goal but again it was McCloughan who got in a last ditch tackle.

The Jets completely dominated the second half, the corner count finished 12 to 1 in favour of the hosts, Thomson, Elrich and North all go on wonderful solo runs rounding defenders but on each occasion the last defender is able to stop the attacker.

With 15 minutes remaining Elrich unleashes a thunderbolt which Packer stops with his hands but Zetter waves play on, the final 5 minutes sees a host of chances for the Jets. Milligan finds Joel Griffiths who ties up Hakansson his shot is deflected wide, a Joel Griffiths corner finds Patafta he can be a hero but his near post strike is just wide and finally in the last minute Elrich's cross has Joel Griffiths goal bound header going into the top far corner but Reddy makes a full stretch save.

It finished Roar 2-1; perhaps a bit harsh on the home team who created far more opportunites.
