Jets v Sydney

A-League report by Robert Szomolnoki
Newcastle United Jets v Sydney FC

John Kosmina's dream start with Sydney FC continues with a second successive win when Michael Bridges fired home the only goal of the game in a hard fought encounter at Newcastle.

The Jets came flying home with a late finish which saw a 88th min D'Apuzzo shot hit the upright, but Sydney FC finished with all 3 points.

This fixture is becoming a real NSW Derby as several hundred visiting Sydney FC fans took up two entire bays on the Eastern Grandstand, dressed in sky blue, in stark contrast to the Newcastle gold.

It was the Jets who commenced the quicker a Joel Griffiths super pass finds Bridge who turns Rudan but his shot is just wide. Joel Griffiths then rounds Middley his cross falls to Spencer but his shot is soft and well wide from in front of goal.

Hearfield is getting plenty of possession his 20 meter run see's him fend of Popovic but his cross is blocked. On 19 mins Hearfield is off on another long run his goal bound shot is blocked by Popovic.

The 20th min sees Sydney's first shot at goal Bridges from 20 meters has Covic perform a full length diving save.

Its now Sydney creating the chances, Junihno misses the ball but it falls to Milligan who fires over the cross bar. Brosque fires one straight at Covic and then on the half hour Middleby's cross finds Bridges but his header is straight at Covic. Talay then has a 25 meter effort straight at Covic.

The Jets almost open the scoring in the 39th min Elrich finds Denni his shot is deflected just wide. A minute later Sydney break quickly Bridges blocked shot falls to Brosque who can only fire wildly over the cross bar.

The first half ends with Bridge looking certain to score as his deflected shot lops over Bolton but amazingly spins away from the goal as it lands just before the goal line.

The second half commences with a Fyfe effort just over the cross bar, from a quick Sydney counter, then Elrich responds with a low shot that is wide of the cross bar.

On the hour it is end to end stuff a Spencer cross finds Tunbridge (who is making his first ever appearance) his header is straight at Bolton.

The 69th min has a Zadkovich header causing a goal mouth scrabble the ball rolls to Bridges on the edge of the penalty area he sweetly hits it into the roof of the net, he raises his arm in celebration even before it crosses the line, 1-0 Sydney FC.

Spencer responds immediately with a well hit 25 meter effort but its straight at Bolton, The Jets have never came from behind to win a game in the A-league, Van Egmond perhaps aware of this brings on Jardel & Kohler for Hearfield & Spencer.

Sydney are keeping possession with a series of short passes.

A 80th min Joel Griffiths corner finds Jardel his bullet header is saved by Bolton from point blank range the ball rebounds to Jardel who on the ground is able to get a shot past Bolton but it is cleared off the line.

The 84th min has Fyfe get away with a hand ball, Sydney win a corner and the crowd have become hostile, they throw cans and bottles at Talay has he takes a corner, but I am sure he has seen much worse from his playing days in Turkey.

The 88th min has D'Apuzzo deflected shot hitting the upright. It finishes Sydney 1-0 perhaps harsh on the hosts.
