Newcastle United Jets v Queensland Roar


A tale of two penalties, one scored, one missed. The Jets came flying home with a late finish which almost saw a dramatic come from behind win as Holland's last second effort was blocked by Ognenovski.

It was the Roar who commenced with a dream start with a Zullo run into the penalty area he finds Kruse who fakes to pass then blasts the ball past Covic 1-0 to the Roar on 33 seconds of play, the home crowd are stunned into silence.

The home teams first attack came in the 12th min with the impressive Griffiths able to fend off two defenders and fire a shot that has Reddy saving in front of Denni.

Reinaldo responds for the Roar in the 18th minute he easily rounds Laybutt who is looking sluggish and fires a 40 metre effort wide.

Its end to end stuff as a dangerous Thomson cross is cut out by Ognenovski, a minute later a long ball finds Bridge and his cross pass finds Holland and his goal bound chip is just over the cross bar.

The Jets midfielders are winning the loins share of possession in the middle of the park with Denni, D'Apuzzo and Thompson impressive. On the half hour a Bridge cross finds Hearfield in front of goal just 5 meters away but his header has Reddy making a diving save from point blank.

The Roar are now absorbing the pressure and relying on counter attacks Zullo and Kruse are looking very sharp up front, Kruse beautifully breaks away in the 35th minute and ties up Marcinho but the Brazilian's shot from the edge of the penalty area is wide of the near post, he is still awaits his first goal for the Roar.

The Jets respond with a Bridge chip who finds Griffiths in front of goal but his chip over Reddy is centimetres wide of the far post.

The first half ends with a delightful Zullo run which ends in a dangerous cross that Laybutt clears.

The second half commences with Zullo bringing down Hearfield in the penalty area and Shield points to the spot to the delight of the home crowd, Griffiths calmly drills the ball past Reddy from the spot, its 1-1.

The goal seems to spark the Roar into action, Marcinho fires wide from 20 meters out and then in the 66th minute a Seo cross finds Kruse who brings the ball under control in the penalty area, but is brought down by Laybutt, it sees him get a yellow card, the penalty is taken by Moore but he hits it softly to Covic'c left, he is able to make the diving save which bring's the home crowd into wild applause.

Thompson's fierce free kick finds the goal keeper as the Jets appear to want to win it more.

The 75th minute has a Mckay free kick finding Reinaldo in front of goal, his glancing header is narrowly wide, at this point Mario Jardel makes his appearance, but is ineffective.

The final seven minutes is all the Jets, Thomson crosses for Holland his header is just over the cross bar, a loose ball in the middle of the park falls to Griffiths his 25 meter effort is just over the cross bar and finally a Holland goal bound shot in the closing seconds sees a fine last ditch Ognenovski block.

It finished 1-1 perhaps a bit harsh on the home team who created far more opportunites.
