Newcastle v South Melbourne

Round 3 Match report by Steve Bradbury
Newcastle Breakers v South Melbourne

Breakers lost 0 - 2 to the Lakers. First quarter went to the Lakers with some nice interchange passing, although no penetration. They never got near the box for all the pretty leadup work. Second part of the first half was all Breakers, hitting both the bar and post and some nice work by Halpin and Zane.

Second half was even until ten minutes in when Richie was sent off for a hard tackle. The player he took out did the usual 'dying swan' routine, before eagerly running back on as soon as the red card was shown - he and the ref got liberal doses of 'cheat' for the rest of the night.

The Breakers surprisingly then put Lakers under real pressure, hitting the bar yet again before Trimboli weaved some magic and caught the Breakers defence asleep. 0 - 1. This turned the game the Lakers way with the Breakers attacking to recover the goal against. Some sloppy tackling in the box together with another 'swan dive' saw the ref award a penalty - again to cries of 'cheat'. That sealed the game at 0 - 2.

Lakers looked pretty but would need to be more potent up front to claim the Cup. They had one sniff at a goal all match which Trimmers to his credit took well. He showed again what a good player he is. For the Breakers it was the same old story. They had about 5 clear shots at goal, three which hit the woodwork, plus two penalties turned down that looked equally claimable as that of the Lakers spot kick. Oh, well, a lost three points, but well done Lakers. The general feeling was one of disappointment, but if the Lakers are candidates for winning the Cup, the Breakers are certainly 'top 6' material this year.
