Glory v Adelaide

Round 22 report by Eamon Duffy
Perth Glory v Adelaide United

Perth Glory striker Damian Mori answered his coaches call to arms with a double to ensure his team stayed 6 points clear at the top of the NSL table.

Both his goals were headers in the first half, and they silenced the few critics in the crowd after he had earlier shown the effects of a 5 match lay off, following his fall from favour with coach Mich d'Avray.

The fact that he scored both augers well for the rest of the season for Glory as an in form Mori is surely an asset for any team with hopes of winning the Championship.

However the way the game started for Mori did not exactly inspire confidence, as he showed just how rusty a player can become from a long stint on the bench. In the 5th minute Hassell won a header on the left and this was in turn fortuitously flicked on by Despotovski into the path of Mori who found himself running into the Adelaide penalty area. But the star striker managed to pull the ball wide of the post with only Scarsella to beat.

Within 3 minutes it was quick thinking by Pondeljak with a free kick that played Mori in, he controlled the ball well but this time Scarsella was out quickly to deflect the shot at goal.

Adelaide had their first real chance in the 18th minute when hesitation in the Glory defence nearly allowed the nippy Pellegrino in on goal, but the ever alert Petkovic was out quickly to clear.

In the 23rd minute it was Pondeljak again who was the creator with a great through ball to Mori on the right. The striker carried the ball towards the area but just as the crowd waiting for the shot he surprisingly pulled the ball back toward the supporting Despotovski, the ball was cleared, but only to Pondeljak following up and his stinging shot was also blocked and cleared by the defence.

After 25 minutes a Despotovski corner found its way to the far post where it was met by the inrushing Harnwell only for it to be cleared off the line by an Adelaide defender.

The next action happened after 30 minutes when Perth's central defender Harnwell fired a great diagonal ball out to the right wing to the raiding Despotovski, he beat his marker before pinpointing a cross into the middle that was sweetly met by Mori to give Scarsella no chance and give Glory the lead.

The delight on Mori's face was equaled only by the relief around the ground as the local supporters realised that the confidence was back.

This was highlighted further just 4 minutes later when following great interchange between Despotovski, Faria and Pondeljak, it was the latter this time who crossed into the United penalty area, but once again it was Mori who flung himself at the ball and again who beat Scarsella with the header to double Glory's lead.

The second half was 13 minutes old when the MES nearly witnessed the goal of the season. It started with a corner to Adelaide that was cleared to the edge of the Glory area. Pondeljak controlled the ball before starting on a run that was to take him into the United area. During the run Mori pulled the defender to the right as Pondeljak plundered his way left and with just Scarsella to beat the talented midfielder tried a chip that did indeed beat the keeper but also the post as it went wide.

In the 59th minute it was Pellegrino who cleared a path through the middle before hitting a shot from 20 meters that was comfortably held by Petkovic.

Eight minutes later some clever play at a Glory free kick by both Coyne and Bingley finished with Coyne sending in a dangerous cross that once again Mori beat everybody to with a diving header but unfortunately for him it went wide.

As the game headed towards it inevitable conclusion the United side never gave up and had a number of half chances and shots that were capably dealt with by Petkovic.

So Perth continued their exceptional home form which now stands at 8 wins in a row, with 25 goals scored and just 4 conceded. Not bad for a so called "boring "side.

As for Adelaide the loss of both Lozanovski and Alosi meant that Veart had to play in a much deeper role and therefore blunted their already weak attack.
