Stallions v Glory

Round 13 report by Chris Dunkerley
Marconi-Fairfield v Perth Glory

Marconi played some nice football and dominated 67 minutes of this match, but Glory pounced with two quick goals to snatch away the points.

It was almost as if Perth said "right, we are two thirds through the game, we'll just rearrange ourselves and we'd better knock a couple in". Having asborbed the pressure applied by the Stallions, who opened up the Glory defence time after time without the killer punch, they got numbers in the Marconi box in time for Jade North to knock in a ball from the right to the far post, and after several attempts at sinking it, it fell to Damian Mori who made no mistake from close range past Michael Turnbull.

Five minutes later a quick ball out from defence to the right found Jade North who steamed up the sideline and whipped in a cross which arrived into the area at the same time as Bobby Despotovski, and his diving header left Turnbull with no chance at all.

Perth came into this game with two losses on the road in succession and without Tom Pondeljak and Matt Horsley. They needed a win to keep pressure on Parramatta and South Melbourne, and then plan to make their soon to be opened new home ground (Members Equity Stadium) a 'fortress' for the remaining half of the season.

Marconi had strikers Joe Spiteri and Jeromy Harris missing through suspension after accumulating four yellow cards, Alex Brosque and Michael Thwaite away on U23 duty, and Dominic Longo injured.

Marconi started brightly with Nick Carle finding his way through almost from the kick off but shooting weakly at Perth custodian Jason Petkovic. The best chance of the first half came through a typical interpassing move, when Todd Brodie slotted the ball through to Nick Carle, who found Eric Anabalon on the left, and the diminutive striker brought out a full stretch save by Petkovic diving to his right.

Generally the first half saw Marconi dominating possession as they interwove their moves, often finding a chink in Glory's defensive armour but never penetrating it. Carle had a good opportunity in the 33rd minute, receiving and holding the ball at the edge of the box but he tried too many times to turn each way, and was smartly closed down by Sean Murphy.

They continued after the break but with Perth absorbing the pressure a lack of variation saw Marconi gradually seeming less and less likely to score despite their possession.

Best for Marconi were Nick Carle, Shane Webb, Todd Brodie, Eric Anabalon, and Angelo Costanzo. Glory got good value from Sean Murphy, Brad Hassell, Jade North, and Petkovic.
