Spirit v Newcastle

Round 5 report by Tony Calder
Northern Spirit v Newcastle United

The brief summary - we were crap, Newcastle was crap, the referee (Perry Mur) was crap, the ground was exceptionally crap.

Newcastle made some forays early on, and Hendo was the busier keeper, but generally Newcastle looked as if they were playing for a draw. Spirit had a few chances, and Catlin was called upon for a few good saves, but generally the Spirit midfield never came to terms with the cow-paddock like nature of the ground and were unable to string more than 2 or 3 passes together without giving away possession.

Certainly the surface affected both teams' ability to play the ball on the ground, and the game degenerated into a hoof it and hope affair.

The referee was terribly inconsistent and seemed to penalise both teams for what appeared to be minor incidents, but let some much rougher stuff go.

For Spirit Hendo played well and was awarded the man-of-the- match, Burgess also had a good game, as did Cranney and Bingley - not much can be said about the rest of them.

Spirit could have had a penalty in time added on, when the ball was kicked into a Newcastle defender's arm (didn't see who), he clearly hadn't made an effort to play at it though.
