Carlton v Marconi

Round 21 report by David Arnold
Carlton SC v Marconi-Fairfield

Carlton Academy and the VIS drew 1-1. Hardly a classic but the goals were unbelievable. The match was between two of the best youth sides in the country and thankfully we still have good young players coming through.

Azzopardi is an excellent defender, I can only wonder how he went missing for about 5 years (he played in the 1995 U-17 WYC). Also impressive for the VIS were nos 8 and 11 (no teamsheets unfortunately) 8 was a clever and strong midfielder whilst 11 dribbled well and on another day might have had 2 goals.

Carlton Academy scored first, a free kick brilliantly met by Martin with a header off the post. Martin is easily the best header of a ball I have *ever* seen. He is also vastly superior to Stuart Slater but let's not get into that yet.

Carlton Academy failed to clear a corner(?) and VIS no.13 simply smashed in a rocket volley off the underside of the bar. Oooh.

sadly the entree was much better than the main course, but the main course has been bullshit for 2 months now...

Carlton 1 (Marth pen)
Marconi 1 (Trajanovski)

Yawn. Yawn. Yawn. You get the idea. Basically, Carlton's gameplan seems to involve sending long balls in no discernible pattern up the pitch, the aerial prowess of Joey Kennedy not needed. Our wingers also have been given licence to disappear for considerable time during a game.

Eg, Moreira (will somebody please dropkick this **** back to Brasil?) and Thompson combined *beautifully* for Thompson to dart through and score a goal (disallowed). They did practically nothing else...

Marconi were keeping it much simpler although their superstar Italian import does a great injustice to Italian football. Never mind, Carlton can top that with their two superstar pom imports giving a very bad name to English and Scottish football.

Our superstar Pom import justified his salary when he finally beat his man and was bought down by Gibson?, a penale which Marth scored as usual. I cannot for the life of me remember the last time a Carlton player other than Marth scored at Olympic cemetery, please don't tell me because it will be too depressing.

Again, a Carlton team failed to clear a cross/corner and Trajanovski put it in.

It was a perfect day for football, and the crowd might've even been a couple hundred more than usual...
