Breakers v Spirit

Round 21 report by Tony Calder
Newcastle Breakers v Northern Spirit

For those who haven't heard, the final score was 4-1 to the Breakers after they led 1-0 at half-time.

Given that Spirit had 7 first squad players out, and no fit strikers, it was always going to be a tough ask to beat Newcastle at home, and so it proved.

The first half was a fairly even affair, although not many real chances were created. Newcastle took one of the few they made, Spirit didn't, even though the ball had beaten Catlin, the post and a defender saved Newastle. Robbie Slater looked out of position as striker, and his first touch often wasn't good enough. Spirit had two free kicks in what should have been dangerous situations - but as anyone who has watched the Spirit this season will know - a dead ball situation is not a scoring opportunity for us.

The second half started well for the Breakers - they scored their second after about 3 minutes. It was a pretty soft goal. There was a goal mouth scramble, and two or three defenders failed to clear the ball before it was in the back of the net. This really changed the whole complexion of the game. Spirit pushed more men forward - which troubled the Newcastle defence, although it also freed space up for Newcastle's forwards. Spirit didn't use their extra men up front well - at one point it looked more like the Spirit players giving Bobby Catlin goalkeeping practise.

The Breakers really killed the game when they scored their third, although Lyons scored shortly afterwards, Newcastle shortly restored their lead with another soft goal. Perosh may have made too many mistakes, and is nowhere near the form he was displaying earlier this season. Time to bring back Hendo.

Newcastle were clearly the better side in the second half, and never looked likely to be anything but winners once they had scored their second. Their defence was well organised and rarely troubled - there was a tendancy to give Slater too much room, but his first touch let him down almost every time.

Spirit - well, after being competitive in the first half, they were woeful in the second. Passes regularly went astray, marking was lax, crosses were overhit.

Gerry Connelly had an OK game, no more dubious decisions than any other ref, but he was too often not keeping up with the play - he seems to need to work on his fitness. The assistant referee on the western line was truly appaling.

Almost certainly end of the line for Spirit - it will require a lot of wins, and a lot of results going our way, for us to still be active come finals tme, but it looks much brighter for the Breakers to make the finals for the first time in their history.
