Spirit v Glory

Round 16 report by Andrew Shead
Northern Spirit v Perth Glory

In a game in which the Spirit were the better side, they ended up being lucky to escape with a draw after goalkeeper John Perosh was sent off for a professional foul with about 15-20 minutes to go. A Perth ball over the top found Despotovski (I think) just inside the Spirit half without a Spirit defender in sight. Perosh had no choice but to come out of his area and dive at Despotovski's (???) feet. The ball ran free and with two Perth players in the vicinity and still no defenders around the referee (for some reason known only to him) pulled up play as Perth were calmly putting the ball in the Spirit net. The failure to play advantage would have to be the worst and most costly decision I have ever seen. Perth were always a better chance to score with two men against none, than from a free kick 10-15 yards outside the area.

After Perosh's sending off Bingley took over in goals and had very little to do, apart from tipping a long range shot over the bar. The Spirit lead 1-0 at half-time after a goal from Luke Casserley, and shortly before Perosh's sending off Boutsianis equalised for Perth in a goal-line scramble. At the end of the day a draw was probably a fair result with Spirit having had the better chances but Perth being robbed of a goal by an atrocious refereeing decision (unless there's some rule I am not aware of that prevented him from playing the advantage). Perth also wasted two free kicks after Perosh's sending off by taking long-range shots, where crosses into the area, luring Bingley to over-commit himself, may have been the better option.
