Breakers v Glory

Round 12 report by Steve Bradbury
Newcastle Breakers v Perth Glory

The Newcastle Breakers pipped the Perth Glory outfit in match of thrills, spills, and quality football tonight at Breakers Stadium.

The Breakers created their own history when they defeated Perth Glory 3-2. By winning four consecutive games it is the first time in Breakers history (formed 1991) that they have achieved this result.

All of the goals were scored in the first half with John Buonavoglia 19, Shane Pryce 24 and Travis Dodd in the 44.

For Perth, Bobby Despotovski netted in the 28 and former Breaker Troy Halpin scored Perths second in the 34.

A massive thunderstorm reduced the crowd to 4,127, but didn't reduce the entertainment on display. The Breakers caught the Glory by surprise by playing full-on attacking football in the first half, and it wasn't until the Perth team were 0 -2 and struggling that they started to seriously threaten the Breakers goal.

The Glory came back with a vengance to post two goals and level the scores after John Buonavoglia grabbed his seventh goal of the season, and Shane Pryce scored from a blistering free kick. The Breakers should have got a third late in the half from a penalty after Buonavoglia was upended in the box. However, Skipper Shane Pryce missed his second penalty in a row to a chorus of groans from the crowd. Very late in the half, Travis Dodd made amends and finished off a move that had the Glory in tatters.

After a half time break that featured the debut of the thirty strong HeartBreakers cheer squad, the match see-sawed without any further addition to the score. Both sides lived dangerously at times as they sought to take advantage. In the end, to a chorus of Rowdies wearing their trademark celery T Shirts and waving celery sticks, the Breakers dispatched the Glory threat to score the full three points and see them propelled into the top six.

To-nights scoreline was the same as last years corresponding round some twelve months ago.

To cap off a great night, the Youth Team beat Wollongong 6-0 with Robbie Angievski and David Ross a double each with Rufo and Juchniewicz one each.
