Match Report by Keith Gilmour

Typical of the Indonesians' best play against Safeway at Woonona in their tour opener last week was a brilliant move in the 60th minute. Iswadi raced up the left, transfering to Salmon asution and Safeway's defence was at sixes and sevens as Risdianto took the pass with only Steve Hesford in goal to beat. Somehow, the heady Indonesian managed to fuss and fuddle over the ball until the opportunity had been absolutely squandered. That in a nutshell, was the story of the Indonesians' lack of success in a lively exhibition in which Safeway recorded three first-half goals and won 4-0 at a canter.
Safeway captain-coach Peter Wilson approached the match in a very serious fashion. He had the bag sewn up and stitched four times over before he bought capable substitutes Danny McKinnon and John Bingham in for the 12 minutes remaining. Defensive lapses by Widodo gave physically superior Safeway the early breaks, and Drew Dunlop and Adrian Alston each banged in early goals. Bobby Fryer netted on halftime, but the goal of the match was credited to a Dave Rigby header after Gary Tuckerman had made a glorious raid from seven metres inside the left touchline. Persija coach Sinjo Aliandu brought Oyong Lisa to stopper after the interval. Lisa held the fort quite well. Iswadi and Risdianto were the pick of the visitors.
The compact Woonona ground gave the over-4,800 crowd a close view of Persija's immaculate passing, even allowing that Safeway did not permit them to fully exhibit their strength until late in the game. For most of the time Safeway super-imposed their style on proceedings. Peter Wilson made very few lapses, and his team did well enough to show that, at the very least, they will be streets ahead of their 1973 selves in fitness and will-to-win. Steve Hesford, 19 and 1m 84, quickly cut off the shots that came his way. Recommended to the club by Jim Kelly, Hesford missed a place with Preston North End after a five-week trial, and Coventry City was keen to check him over at the time he left. The astute Kelly's word is that Safeway will find the lad an absolutely brilliant 'keeper after he obtains his preliminary experience under local conditions.
Hadianto did some good work in goal, but Persija's play confirmed just how much their national team is dependent upon their wonderful 'keeper Ronny Pasla. The team's second-half revival was considerably influenced by the introduction of achman Halim and Salmon Nasution, but such factors cannot substitute for the necessity to crash the ball into the net.
