With the NSWSF split from the NSWSFA the federation decided to conduct a number of 'representative' matches. With the federation players banned from any official matches against other states they decided to run three matches between a New South Wales side and a side composed of immigrant European soccer players known as a European XI. This match was the first in a three game series.
