China v Australia report by FFA

China 0 - Australia 0

The Qantas Matildas have concluded their series against China with a scoreless draw at Aussie Stadium in Sydney tonight.

The Australians however dominated large parts of the second half, striking the frame of the goal on three occasions, but they were unable to make the vital breakthrough.

The first half was largely uneventful with neither side able to take control however Jo Peters struck the outside of the post with a chipped shot mid-way through the half.

The second half was a different story with Australia peppering the Chinese goal without reward.

Sarah Walsh sprung the offside trap five minutes into the half with but her square ball to Kate Gill saw the flag raised with only the goalkeeper to beat.

From the ensuing play Joanne Burgess fired a shot over from close range under pressure from the goalkeeper, after a fine cross played into the penalty area by captain Cheryl Salisbury.

Gill headed a looping header onto the crossbar on the hour mark as the Australian's intensity increased.

Australian goalkeeper Melissa Barbieri who has had relatively little to do over the course of the three-match series, then made a stunning one hand save with Duan Han's close-range shot which was heading inside the near post.

It was then the turn of Salisbury to hit the woodwork with her far post header rebounding to safety.

Chinese midfielder Na Zhang was then dismissed for a second cautionable offence following a foul on Peters.

Substitute Collette McCallum's shot then forced a save but it was Peters volley in the dying minutes that appeared destined for the back of the net until Chinese goalkeeper Wenxia Han made a superb save to ensure the match finished scoreless.

"There were a lot of positives to come out of this match, and indeed the series, although obviously disappointing we couldn't quite get a winner today," said Qantas Matildas coach Tom Sermanni.

"Once again I was impressed that we able to increase our intensity as the match wore on against strong opposition.

"The series also showed that we are developing good depth in the squad with players that have come on making valuable contributions.

"Overall the series has been extremely valuable as we continue our preparations for next year's World Cup qualifiers."

The two teams also played out a scoreless draw eight days ago, with the Qantas Matildas triumphing 3-1 in their second encounter on Monday.

Australia currently ranked 16th in the world - seven places behind China - have defeated China only twice in 21 encounters prior to this series.

The qualifying tournament for the 2007 FIFA Women's World Cup is currently scheduled for July next year, with both the final tournament and the 2008 Olympic Games to be held in China.
